98 Honda Civic HX - Sputters when accelerating. Feels bogged down and lacking power. Does not do this if I run the RPMs high but if I drive it like most people typically would or try to accelerate up to speed when getting on the highway it will sputter, bog down, and seems like its miss firing or something. Do not back fire or anything like that. Has been going on a long time. I have changed the fuel filter, distributor cap, and rotor but no luck. I have had Advanced Auto scan it for me and the last time it said something like "EGR - High Voltage" and a long time ago came back with something about the exhaust but I figured that may have been due to a leak in my exhaust but maybe not. My next two guess in order would be that EGR valve is dirty or needs replaced but I want to make sure before I spend that much on a new part since they are quite expensive for the manual HX model. My next guess would be the catalytic converter but not sure. Any help would be great.

Its either your fuelk pump or fuel filter that is causing your problem you need to have filter replaced to see if that solves your problem if not then it is your fuel pump you will need to have replaced.

If your car is fuel injected it may be the throttle position sensor, (TPS) hook up a DVOM and check that voltage output of sensor is steady closed to open throttle, since 35MPH is near closed throttle, that is were to focus your attention, also the mass air flow meter (MAF) may be at fault, do you have any codes? These 2 parts donot as a rule set codes.

electrical issus. have you ever replaced the spark plugs and wires? distributer cap and rotor? might be time to do this routine maintenence.

Your timming belt has jumped a tooth.Remove the covers and check that all teeth are ok.Then tighten or change the timming belt.I would fit a new timming belt.Has it is costly when they fail.Good luck.pippall.

Brandor -The wires and plugs were replaced recently when this all started and the distributor cap/roter was changed a few months ago along with the fuel filter but did not help at all. I planned to get new plugs and wires soon but I doubt that was it unless the last ones are defective. Dennis Weld - I am going to get Advanced to scan it again in about 15 minutes and I can post them. I have some other issues too. I started to drive A LOT a year ago and it has been going through oil big time. I'd say after 10 days and 1000 miles I will be about 2-3 quarts low. There is NEVER any on the ground.
I just went and got it scanned. These are the codes and info it gave me. p1498 - EGR valve lift sensor - high voltage p1259 - vtec system malfunction P0141 - O2 heater circuit- bank sensor
