Not able to line up timing marks

Have tried to set according to steps described in manual as well as steps offered by fellow enthusiasts. Vehicle has 190,000 mi. Still runs great and has been a very reliable car. All this came about from a smog check that passed all but the timing mark issue. Any suggestions ? From - RX2

SOURCE: timing mark 1994 sentra 1.6l out of 5 marks what

The timing marks indicate degrees of advance. Thus, the first mark would be top dead center and in increments of two it increases to 10 degrees before top dead center.

Setting timing marks to get vehicle to start after engine overhaul

Timing marks setting Corolla 4A-FE.
Align the notch on the crankshaft pulley with the "0" mark on the timing belt lower cover.

With the crankshaft pulley being aligned with the 0 mark on the timing belt cover, the hole on the camshaft sprocket should exactly be in front of the notch of camshaft bracket.

check the valve clearance. If you have valves with excessive clearance, then they are bent. the cam gear will have 2 flat marks that line up with the surface that the valve cover lays on, (9 and 3 o clock) and the "UP" sign at 12 o clock. the flywheel will be marked with a white line for TDC. be sure the balancer gear is lined up correctly.

Setting timing

I think one must adjust the timing by advancing or retarding the ignition timing, not by adjusting the timing light.

If you are trying to set the BASE timing, you probably need to connect the orange/red and green/white wires of the blue service check connector with a jumper wire. The blue service check connector is located on passenger side under the dashboard.

The timing mark for this vehicle is on the flexplate / flywheel, and is usually located by removing a little rubber stopper or lifting off an inspection cover.

The timing is PROBABLY 15 degrees BTDC +/- 2 degrees. Be aware that many hondas PRIMARY ignition mark IS 15 degrees BTDC, NOT ZERO... so when you line the pointer and the flash up with the line, it is properly adjusted.

DISCLAIMER: I am (clearly) not a certified auto mechanic. Go check out and read a service manual from your local library. Your mileage may vary...
