Has anyone replaced an ignition switch on a 1999 Volvo S80 themselves?

My car has 181,000 on it and I was told by a dealer that it needs an ignition switch after having it looked at for a "SRS service urgent" message in the text window. I occasionally lose the radio controls, blower fan, power seats, windows and locks after I start the car and if I restart the car or wiggle the key in the ignition, everything will work again. Just wondering if it is possible to replace it myself?

You are in the Ballpark. It will cost you several Hundred to fix. Will prob have to have the module replaced. Go to a trusted European repair placed. DO NOT TAKE TO DEALERunless you want to give them the car. They are very happy with $$$$$$$$ You can fix for alot less than dealer. Good luck.

SOURCE: "SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT"...message

If you have SRS and "brake failure" it should be taken to a dealer. a shadetree mechanic will screw more up than he will fix in this case. trust me on this! you will pay a price, but will save you more $ and less headache in the longrun.

    SOURCE: Car won't start

If there is a blinking car icon with an "X" over it. This icon means the Immobilizer has been activated and hence won't allow the car to start. It could be due to a bad SCU, Start Control Unit. The SCU is actually the ignition switch on these cars.
Most of the time it's triggered by the anti-theft system..You can try this trick i learned that the dealers won't tell you...try locking and unlocking of the doors five times with the remote to reset the immobilizer and see if this helps.
Good luck...i hope this helps...please take a minute to rate me a fixya.

just unhook the battery for about 20 minutes. if you have an anti-theft radio make sure you know the code and how to enter it.

1999 Volvo S80 T6, Starts blower on its own.

If you are talking about the thermo electric cooling fan, its operation is independent of the car's electical system. It is switched on and off by the engine temperature. When you park, the engine heat soaks upward to heat the thermostat turning the fan on. It will run until the engine cools down and the thermostat switches it off.

Volvo S80 German to English or Dutch

    Hi there,

Most are of the opinion that this can only be done by an authorised Volvo Dealership, by reprogramming the 'option table' to your preferred language.

This should only be a small labor charge, to have them connect the Vidas System an reprogram the Message Centre.

Contact your local Volvo Dealership for a price to have this done.

    Cheers,

Does anyone no of a cold air intake for a 1999 volvo S80 with a 2.8turbo? I was told you cant get one but can hardly believe it.

Here is the secret to cold air intakes. Because the filter is sitting in the middle of a hot engine bay, they are actually not any help, actually more of a problem, because they pull in cold air, they pull in hot air which is not what you want. To do it properly, you need to have he filter in an enclosed box that recieves outside air. So, I wouldn't bother with it.

    I have a S80 Volvo 2000 model. I lost my spare key.

Pay the dealer the $300.00. I have been told it's worth it to have an extra set due to the computer communication of the keys with the ignition (not sure how it works exactly.) To re-key or get a new ignition costs like 1600-1800 dollars and takes approximately 10 days to even get the parts. I checked with a Volvo dealership in WA State. I am having problems with my ignition now and the keys won't come out or turn the last little click to be able to pull them out (but not all the time), also my car will turn on no problem (only have trouble getting keys out) my car just won'y go into gear, it seems it happens more frequently when it is below 55 degrees, even after the car temp guage has reached the half way mark. I have a 1999 Volvo S80 (I hate that car!)

1999 Volvo S80 stuck in park

see my friend easy fix,the problem you are having is a wire problem that locks or unlocks the shifter from the park potition and also unlocks the key from the ignition switch is just getting stuck inside the ignition switch, so more likely needs lubrication you can do it yourself or have a machanic do it
for you, maybe replace it with a new one( wich i dont think is nesesary) take it out clean it, put new grease and it should be good to go, good luck. This wire is conected to the ignition switch, on the right side and can be pulled out with your hand.

Neither turn signal work on 1999 volvo s80, fuses are ok,

Remove the fuse that is labeled "SWM" in the fuse box, then re-install it. This should fix your problem. Have the software updated by a Volvo dealer to prevent this in the future.
