Fuel pump/gas gauge issue? When gas gauge gets to half tank fuel pump light goes on and after a few miles engine backfires and runs out of gas. Is gas pump/gauge the problem?

Just bellow half tank mark, car starts missing, has explosive noises and finally engine dies and will not start until more gas is added.

The Codes you should get will be P1232,P1233,P1235 orP1237 It would seen that the fuel level is not being sensed until you keep the tank fuel & the PCM & other Module think you out of fuel. Sounds like a worn out sending unit. The exhaust has to be lowered, driveshaft remove & fuel tank dropped. I wouldn't pay a dealer for all that,it will cost a fortune. After the engine died on half tank open the fuel cap and let air in. Sometimes the tank air vents are blocked and as the fuel is drawn out the tank a vacuum is created that is strong enough to override the fuel pump pumping capability.
If this does not help it is the fuel pump not being able to lift fuel out of the tank due to normal wear and tear of the pump or damage to the pipe leading to the pickup point in the tank. Replace the pump and assosiated piping.

Sound like fuel pump problems or clogged fuel filter, replace fuel filter first then check fuel pressure should be 26 - 45 psi for 3.0 engine and 43 psi for a 3.9 engine.

This sounds like the PCM has taken a turn for the worst. The pcm relay sends power to the fuel relay for 2 seconds to prime the fuel system just before start up.
Then the pcm ungrouds the signal for a prove out.

SOURCE: Why would a Lincoln Town Car 1994 start shaking as

hi,

if its a 3.8 v6 then check the EGR valve. the egr valve will get a hole in it an cause a huge vacuumn leak, and cause that. untill you take it in you can plug the vacuumn hose that goes to the EGR valve on the intake manifold, fix it soon.

You have two pumps,I guess you know that ,if you already did one. Did you check fuel pressure at the rail and check out the electronic pressure regulator? What codes are coming up and do they stay set?

SOURCE: My Engine check warning light is on in my 2002 LS,

Hello, Take your car to an Autozone, Oreillys, or Advance autoparts store. Any of them will give you a free scan for the cause of the "check light". You may be able to buy the correct part to fix your car and it may be a simple matter of switching a part on a connector.

The Parts guys will be able to tell you where most of the parts go and what is needed to change them. After the new part is installed you may need to have the onboard computer cleared or you will see the old warning for some time.

If the scan shows nothing, then a fuel sample with a change of the fuel filter would be the next step I would take.

If you have any trouble Code numbers to identify, you can send them here and we will identify them for you.

2009 Cadillac Escalade ESV Issues ?!!!

Drop the gas tank and check for contamination/corrosion. You're going to have to do that to replace the fuel level sender anyway and check both the fuel pump (it's in the tank) and the primary filter on the pickup tube.

Town and Country Van running out of gas and guage says half a tank what could be the problem?

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

Dash gas gauge stops showing proper gas level once it hits half a tank. Then gauge will fluctuate between empty (light will come on), full and anywhere in between but seems fine from full tank to half

If the trouble with the gauge started after you worked on it then you likely damaged or created a restriction to the movement of the sending unit. You will have to remove the tank and double-check your work.

At the start of the engine, the fuel gauge reads empty. i know for sure the gas tank is filled up with a decent amount or its full. after afew miles, the gauge slowly moves to its proper reading. i know...

Most cars and truck nowdays show the tank empty when you start it. Then it slowly advances to the correct level of fuel in the tank. You can try and use some fuel additives like Gumout or Valvoline that clean the injectors and other fuel sytem parts. You can get a buildup of tarnish in these parts and this can cause slow readings. If this was the case it should improve after a few tank fulls of gas with the cleaners added. The guage could also slowly be going bad. The newer style guages are connected to the fuel pump and you will need to replace the whole unit if this goes out on you. Keep in mid that when the fuel pump quits, it quits, usually without much advance notice. If the car starts sputtering and does not have full power, this will hint at the fuel pump going bad. If your car has over 100,000 miles on it, you might want to think about preparing to change the fuel pump, these seem to want to go out shortly after 100,000 miles, but you can get lucky once in a while and it can last longer. Keeping your tank at least half full with clean gas is a big help, the gas keeps the fuel pump cool so it last longer!

GMC envoy after I filled gas tank the low fuel light came on and as I was driving it would go off than come back on after a few miles the check engine light come on stayed on and the low fuel light still...

You will need to replace the fuel level sensor which is in the fuel tank. They have a lot of problems because the metal fingers on the sensor wear off and gives you the incorrect readings. This will also cause the check engine light to come on.You will probably have a level sensor code. This will be a lot easier if the fuel level is down to about a quarter tank or less. Also you should be able to get just the level sensor and not have to get the complete fuel pump module.Good luck.

Fuel light keeps popping up and when it does, fuel gauge drops

Sounds like a bad sending unit. It clips to the fuel pump in the tank. It's not hard to remove and pretty self explanatory if you look at it, but if you don't have any experience with fuel line quick disconnects, I wouldn' try it at home. If you do try it, remember 2 things: Run that thing as low on gas a you can first and when it comes to disconnecting the fuel lines, push, squeeze (until it clicks), then pull apart. The tank is held in by 2 or 4 13 or 15mm bolts and a few hoses and lines. Mark the position of the pump before you pull it out.

Gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

If I have less than 1/4 tank of gas my yukon won't start.

I had the same problem. I had a few different mechanics tell me that the fuel pump is starting to go out when it does that. The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank, and the gasoline keeps the pump cool and lubricated. When the fuel tank is less than a 1/4 full, the pump is not submerged anymore, and can have trouble sending gas to the engine. My emergency fix was to get underneath the car on the driver's side and bang on the gas tank about three times. It will start up, and will run great unless you turn your engine off. But eventually you're going to need a new fuel pump. Once I replaced it, the problem went away.
