Battery dies on 1997 jaguar xj6 with new alternator

Alternator and battery are new and car fires up in the morning and then will not start (after 5 or more hours) due to weakened battery. A quick jump fires it right up (literally 1 minute jump start) Runs well all of the way home and will start if I shot it off and re-start. If it sites for a few hours then the battery becomes an issue, again-Thank you for any advice-Best regards

I was changing battery and i touched the negative cable to the positive port. It blew 7 fuses and now my alternator isn't charging the battery. I never had this problem before touching the negative to the positive. I replace the fuses but assuming I did something to the alternator. This is 1997 Jaguar Xj6. Can anyone tell me the steps to changing the alternator please? thanks

You have a draw on the battery. Short circuit somewhere in the electrical. Must use OHM meter and start checking wires, Start near the alternator and ignitoin work away from there. A quick look over all your wires to see if there are any noticable cuts or frays may save you some time if your lucky. Jags are known for electrical problems.

SOURCE: car won't start (battery issues)

You should have a voltmeter, measure the voltage across the battery terminal when the engine running the reading should be around 14Volts.If 14 volts is there your Alternator is good.

SOURCE: Battery needs jump start if car is not driven for 3 days.

u either have a shorted cell in the battery or the system has a current draw like a glove box light being left on, try disconnecting the battery the next time you leave it, if it starts ok then u have a current draw and need to find the source of that draw.

1997 Jaguar XJ6 battery light on, I was told battery is good and so is alternator. Still on.....

The battery light has nothing to due with a bad battery, it indicates the alternator is not producing enough voltage to keep the battery charged up, this can be for many reasons.

I am trying to locate where the voltage stabliser is on my friends 1997 xj6 3.4l Jaguar can anybody tell me where it is ?

It is part of the alternator it is called a regulator. This regulate the voltage that charges the battery. If that regulator goes bad, you end up with overcharging which is dangerous and can blow up the battery, or you end up with a car that has a short and not charging.

Car wont run.

Does it crank well and all that but with no spark or is the battery just dead? If the battery is dead, it either won't charge while alternator is spinning or the alternator doesn't charge well enough to keep the battery charged well. If it jumps and runs indefinitely, battery is done. If it jumps and dies, alternator is done. If battery and alternator are fine, and you have no spark, you may need a new coil, new spark plug wires if they are worn out and too resistant, pick up coil inside of distributor, or you may have some other ignition system issue.

Most times when an alternator fails, it starts charging less and less till the car won't keep running or it won't start the next time. If the alternator hasn't failed, the battery needs replacing. If your battery is 5 or more years old this is a very good possibility. If your alternator failed and you have killed your battery many times before replace them both. Each time you drain a battery to dead you lose about 10% of its current capacity.

If the battery is fine and engine will not turn, starter may need replacing. Hope I helped.
