Subaru Forester 2007 fuel gauge level jumping

The fuel gauge level jumps around from part empty to full etc. Reading on-line I'm guessing it's the fuel level sensor. Has anyone got instuctions, photos or tips for fixing it? I'd rather do it myself then pay big labour cost in fixing.

This problem, is caused by a defective gas level sending unit inside the fuel tank. You must remove the fuel tank from the car to replace the level sensor.

SOURCE: subaru legacy b4 fuel gauge read empty when

You have a fuel level sending unit that is not working properly. It is located inside the fuel tank.

Also, when you ask for help with your vehicle it would be very helpful if you could mention WHICH "Legacy" we are talking about. It seems that Subaru got "stuck" on the Legacy name - there are actally 9 choices for "Legacy" just for your model year. (see list below) There are also 2 different engines available for that year a 2.2L and a 2.5L.

SOURCE: need to replace my fuel

The fuel sender is in the gas tank. If you can get the vehicle a few feet off the ground then you should be able to handle this. Do the job when the tank is empty of course.

My horns on 2007 subaru outback does not work

Easy just unbolt & remove voltage plug and go buy new one and install then reattach plug. Horns do go bad and the only thing you can do is replace or check if it make noise while jumping from battery using test light.

Have a '92 4runner gas gauge has stopped working properly how does the system work?

It could either be a bad circuit board that controls the gas gauge, or the float in the fuel tank that is connected to the fuel pump has a crack in it and is full of gas so it just sits at near its lowest point.

Can't put gas into my 2010 subaru forester

if the gas gauge reads empty it might be not working properly, and the tank could actually be full. I've seen this time and time again at my station over the past twenty some years. The other posibility could be an obstruction in the filler neck it self. Kids do the darndest things to cars ? LOL. If thats the case then there is Two hose clamps that hold it in place, usually a screw driver or a small socket will work. But first stick a peice of hose in there and try blowing through the hose and listen if you hear bubbles then its full if you hear just air then its empty and blocked. Good luck :- )

My fuel gauge floats from full to empty when I stop at a light! And its stays on empty until I drive for about five minute why is that? I can't get an accurate fuel reading!!

I have the same vehicle and my car actually was full of gas, registered empty & left me on the side of the road..It was the sensor in the fuel line that had to be replaced.

Gauge will move to half then to empty when it almost full of fuel

{: ) That's a typical symptom of a failing or faulty fuel level sensor that needs to be replaced. In your case, you are aware that your fuel tank is almost full, and you expect your gauge to read accordingly. What happened there is that when the level arm reached the half point, there was a break or jump. That point is the high resistance area. When the engine module detects this break or error for only a few seconds, it will automatically reset your gauge to zero reading.

Gas gauge jumping around usually implies fuel level sensor in tank is going bad...Usually if the gauge in dash is going bad will read empty or at various positions depending on fuel level in tank..Electrical short problem in gauge usually affects other gauges in cluster

1989 Saab 900 low level fuel light

You don;t say whether the fuel gauge is reading accurately, or whether it's always on empty. If the gauge is always showing empty, it's most likely a problem with the sending unit in the fuel tank. Check the resistance across the two terminals of the sending unit.

On a C900, the fuel sender level unit is separate from the fuel pump and located on the right side top of the tank, accessible by removing the trunk floor lift up panel (the pump is located on the left side top of the tank.
Possible problems are: electrical line off or broken, float not working (it's fairly delicate); or gauge not working.

Test the resistance of the sending unit with the lines disconnected, the resistance should be 2.6 to 3.8 ohms full tank, 63.3 to 67.5 ohms empty tank; and test for voltage across the top of the sender unit, if no voltage, that's likely the problem!

If the gauge is otherwise reading accurately (showing 'full' for a full tank, etc) then the problem is likely a gauge malfunction and can be simply replaced.

Good luck!
