I have heard that some General Motors cars have a feature that will shut the car down if it detects a dramatic drop in oil pressure, to prevent engine damage. Is this true!!??

SOURCE: Significant engine damage from oil change

Thank you for asking my assistance. I will try my best to help you.

I have been in the Toyota biz for the last 14 years, and, unfortunatly, have not ever heard of this issue. That being said, I do have connections in the engineering dept at Toyota, and on Monday, I will call out to the west coast and inquire further for you.
Now, to the issue at hand: The shield that was bent down is secured very well to the underside of the valve cover. To bend that device, I can only guess that when the oil was being put into the engine via an oil pump, the nozzle of the pump was *** jammed *** down onto the shield, and broke it loose from the internal retainers under the valve cover, and contacted the cam; this is very possible...I agree with the statement that your SM provided, however, further engine damage? Removal of the oil pan would be in order, to determine if any more pieces are there. Doubt it, though.
And, to answer your last question, the responsibility of the cause for failure is your oil change guy.
He bent/broke the shield, and caused your problem. I hope this has helped, if you have any other comments or questions, please feel free to repost.

SOURCE: The oil pressure gauge keeps dropping down to 0 while i am driving

If you don't hear any ticking or knocking while the pressure gauge drops, the problem is probably a failing "oil pressure sensor". If you do hear a ticking or knocking, the problem is probably a failing "oil pump".

SOURCE: 91 NISSAN MAXIMA , ran out of gas , and put gas in

if it ran out of gas it just may be air locked, you can't just crank the engine turn the key to the run postion for 3 seconds and shut off and do this 7 or 8 times then try starting it. The fuel pump will not pump while cranking it is a fail safe if the car is in a wreck and the pump won't continue to pump gas out and catch on fire. This should fix it for you.

SOURCE: oil pressure gauge goes up when car started, but then down to 0

u Have a problem with the oil sending unit. The sensor is located beack right side of the engine block. Take out the switch and make sure u have good oil PSI. Should be 6 psi at idle and around 50 at 4000 RPM. If the presure is ok replace the switch they are very cheap about 20 bucks. Please rate.

SOURCE: I think I forgot to put oil in the car or even check it...Oooops!

If you heard a shriek, squeak or squeal, you most likely have AT LEAST a spun bearing. This must be replaced. The shaft it is on is also damaged, if not totally ruined.

How to install an old school cable to shut off a Toyota #b diesel motor?

Try shorting the oil pressure switch to earth (i.e. to battery -ve).
I think these motors shut off if you switch the oil pressure sense wire to the chassis, which simulates a loss of oil pressure (oil pressure warning light comes on).
I don't think it prevents it starting, but it shouldn't run when you release the starter. Cheers.

2001 Volvo S80 no oil pressure light blinking on and off at times but oil level is fine. Driving & started 2 tick. Smoke from dip stick and then car died. *******? Or fixable

It depends on the problem and the damage.
The engine can shut off if you lose oil pressure and still have an engine that can be fixed. The shut down is to prevent a fire in a wreck. If the engine computer detects the engine has stopped it kills power to the fuel pump. No oil pressure would make the computer think the engine may have stopped.
You would need to have a mechanic figure out why the oil pressure dropped and then check for internal damage such as bearings.

Did they change your tire pressure. tire pressure affects the mileage dramatically and when ever I have someone change the oil I tell them not to change my tire pressure.

Engine Safety Shut Off??????

Well, more or less.
Most all cars use oil pressure to grant power to the fuel pump.
The computer must see oil pressure or in some cases RPM to power the fuel pump, so that if the vehicle is in a wreck the pump will not keep running just because the key switch is on.
Recent models of most American cars also use that signal to tell the computer the oil pressure is normal. If the oil pressure drops, or the engine overheats, the computer can kill power to the injectors and plugs.

What will cause a truck to lose all oil pressure and the engine to shut off while driving down the road?

If wires came off oil pressure switch or if switch went bad, it would shut down truck immediately. Your oil pressure switch performs 2 functions; oil pressure to gauge.light and it's also a safety feature that if you're in an accident or rollover, when oil pressure drops it shuts off power to fuel pump. I'd start there. The reverse is also a possibility, if fuel pump fails, truck shuts down = no oil pressure.

Changed intake manifold gaskets, and while doing so, spilled a bit of coolant that was left in the intake in with the oil. Changed the oil before I even started my truck, and since then, I will have oil...

It sounds like oil pressure switch is bad. You said you changed? To clarify, your oil pressure switch is also a safety item that shuts down ignition when oil pressure drops. Try an oil pressure gauge (hand held) to relieve your nerves about engine seizure. Make sure you're not getting to much fuel in engine also, that will dilute oil to a thin viscosity and show low oil press.

Oil pressure gauge reads 40 or half pressure

on general motors engines all the way down to 15lbs of oil pressure is acceptable i prefer 30 but if the 40 you have down is the lbs of pressure your in good shape brand new engines generally only have about 45lbs of pressure

89 C4 911 gauges reading incorrectly?

These cars are funky and this is normal...gauges on all of the earlier cars are for general reference...checking the oil level manually while the car is running and warmed up is the most proper way to do this...generally speaking, your pressure should drop as the car warms up, but still reach 5 bar on full accelleration (928's have the same gauge). The oil level gauge will actually increase as the car warms up...the difference can be dramatic.

Drop the oil pan and clean out the oil pick-up screen.
