While on the freeway it through the belts (3 not a serpentine) I was able to limp it home with one belt on the water pump & alternator and balancer. It ran for about 3 miles with no power steering/brake booster and no air pump belts. Now that the belts have been replaced there is a screaming noise from the p steering pump/brake booster. Could driving without a belt have damaged it or is it something else ? Would driving without the air pump be the issue ?
Does the air pump or power steering feel
seized or tight?
The belts came off for a reason
When putting the belts back on, both the air pump and steering pulleys rolled fine. With the screaming I havent tried to drive it. There was a moment when there was no noise and both steering and breaks felt good. Then the squealing started and armstrong steer and brake came back. The belts are on still. The reason why the belts threw in the first place was the harmonic balancer pulley was cracking - eventually popping off. Luck on my side, it popped while waiting for it to cool down before I got back in there to replace the belt. No further damage. This I have since replaced.
So your still replacing the harmonic balancer, both pumpsturn free for now,may seize when warmed up & running, otherwise your okey maybe. Keep us updated on the fix or more problems
Hi Peter, thank you for the help. I replaced the harmonic pulley not the actual balancer. I spoke with a GM service tech and he suggested the pump may have pushed all the fluid out and is now starving. Levels haven't changed, one of the first things I checked. His suggestion was to jack the front end up and cycle the wheels back and forth to move the fluid - ??? . I did that this evening as well as retighten the belts. The screaling didn't stop but it now sounds like maybe the air pump - its like I'm chasing it around. I drove it around the block and noticed the sound doesn't really go away, but varies. I also noticed at idle the steering gets hard. Tomorrow I will put some belt dressing on them - the one belt may have glazed. If that doesn't do it I'll start eliminating the belts and see what piece of equipment it is when out of service. A long process but it looks necessary at this point. Thanks for the help, I'll let you know tomorrow night when I have time. This thing is so hard to work on without pulling the rad and ****** coolers, theres no room to spare.
Do not put belt dressing on the belts. It is not necessary as the belts are new. It will soften & ruin them
The one belt off the crank to the power steering pump was the one I used to get off the freeway. I took your advise, forgot the dressing and instead picked up another belt half an inch shorter - bingo. A combination of a slightly stretched belt and glazing caused all the noise. Funny it wasn't a normal belt slipping sound. It had four of us plus a towtruck driver scratching our heads. Thank you.
Great job & thanks for all the updates. We keep learning as time passes, if we share our experiences

SOURCE: power steering noise
The belt is almost assuredly to tight and needs to be loosened just a hair. It is hard sometimes to get the tension just right. Try looseneing it a bit and hopefully that will help. I have had the same problem in the past.

mcdevito75 here, If you have 1 continuous belt on the engine (serpentine) then the belt could be worn or the tension pully holding the belt tight could be going bad. No noise in Neautral or Park as increased engine speed in these gears over rides the worn part and thus no noise. On a cold engine examine the belt, look for frays / wear from where the belt rides the pullys. If the belt is 2 years old, Change it.

none of the above have any bearing on the failure of said parts in any way or form.as they are not even connected to each other.
