To do it correctly you need a tension gauge, however it is possible without. make sure your timing marks are correct, flywheel locked and camshaft locking tool in place. slacken camshaft sprocket bolt and turn clockwise to stop. fit timing belt in an anticlockwise direction starting at the crankshaft, ensure belt is taught on the non tensioned side between sprockets. turn tensioner pully anticlockwise, untill you can turn belt 90 degrees with finger and thumb pressure. tighten tensioner. tighten camshaft sproket bolt to 63nm. Remove all locking tools. turn engine 2 revolutions from the crankshaft pulley by hand. DO NOT START AT THIS STAGE!!!!!!!! refit all locking tools, if at any stage the engine locks or the tools will not refit, you have done something wrong. Go back to stage one. Check belt tension finger and thumb method, retension as required. turn again by hand. re fit all components and start. If you have whining noises the tension is too tight. Flapping or banging noises too loose. This is not a fool proof method and you have to be aware of the failings of fitting timing belts without the correct tools etc. ENGINE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR IF FITTED INCORRECTLY. A good garage should charge no more than 2.5 hours for this work to be carried out, with a warranty. Hope this helps

Removal and installation of serpentine belt pully on bmw 318 i

I suggest visit this links with interesting information about this job:
- E36-Belt-Replacement/E36-Belt-Replacement

You have to find your belt tensioner, pop the cover off of it, hook a socket and ratchet to it and move it to release the tension off of the belt. While you are holding the belt tensioner, you can slip the belt off of one of the pulleys and then release the tensioner.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Having problems putting serpentine belt back on a 2003 525 2.5 liter bmw

Pop the dust cap off the tensioner pulley and grab it by the bolt inside the pulley. Then you can twist it against the spring tension to make slack.
Because the tensioner moves so far when there is no belt on it, some folks find it easier to slip the new belt over the top of the old belt, so you need to move the tensioner only a quarter inch or so to slip the new belt in between the old belt and the tensioner. Then, when the new belt is in place, you cut the old belt out. I have never tried it because I am usually replacing at least one tensioner bearing when I replace belts, but it sounds like it might work well.

How do you replace the AC compressor belt on a 2004 BMW 745i ???

Hi navygurlrosi,

On the early 745i's BMW thought it would be a great idea not to have a tensioner for the a/c compressor. You have to first remove the alternator belt, which has a tensioner and requires a T55 torx to release the tension. If you are lucky enough to have a tensioner for the a/c belt, the torx will release this tensioner as well. If there is no tensioner, you can use a shop rag to "walk" the belt off the compressor pulley while turning the crank bolt using a ratchet.. It's sort of like the same processes as replacing a bicycle chain. When you go to put on the new belt, it will seem really short, and may require another set of hands to turn the crank bolt with a ratchet. You will also notice the belt making a stretching noise.

How to tension the BMW x5 4.4i 2003 serpentine belt

All BMWs use a spring loaded tensioner. if you are having trouble with the tension then you need to find /use the correct belt path. If you are having trouble getting the belt on the tensioner, then use a section of the old belt to tug the new belt onto the Alt. pulley.

The tensioner that is on the BMW 4.4L M104 motor is found near the idle pulley and can be locked into the slacked position with a 1/4" thick bolt that has the threads ground off also the tensioner can be operated with a 3/8 drive ratchet. Apply tension to this pulley after getting the belt wrapped around the other pulleys and then fit it over the Alt. pulley last.

Dose a 2001 bmw 525i have a timeing belt or timeing chane

Chain. Generally, the chain, tensioner and guides are good for a quarter-million miles or so. The VANOS may act up, but the cam chain lasts a long time.

How do I replace belts on a 4 cyl 93 bmw 318is. My biggest problem is finding out how to release the tension.

Most later model cars have a belt tensioner. Look for a wheel or pully that the belt rides over. You will see a place to put a ratchet or breaker bar. Pull back on the tensioner and it will allow you to slip the belt out for replacement.
