91 toyota timming retards while advancing throttle.

Working on a problem with my 1991 Toyota 22RE : the ignition timing goes about 15 degrees retarded during initial throttle opening. Timing is set at 5 degrees advanced @ 750 per spec.with diagnostic connector jumped. After timing is set to this value the truck is a dog, won't accelerate and if you mash the throttle quickly a back fire can be heard in the air filter housing near the air flow. Basically there is no advance of the timing to compensate for the rapid increase in RPM. I had worked around this problem by advancing the timing manually to about 15 degrees advance. It works but now that I have time I want to fix it right. I pulled the motor at 265000 and bored .02 mm installed fresh set of pistons, rings, cam, chain, head, about a year ago, I've had this truck since 96. Getting an ECU to see if that fixes it will update later.

SOURCE: 91 Toyota 22re sputters around 2500rpms

your throttle position sensor might me bad or out of adjustment. if it is out of adjustment then it can misfire all the way up to 3500 rpm.
i had a friend that had a miss fire at 2500 rpm. i adjusted the tpss right and the misfire went away. Check for engine codes by jumping TE1 and E1.
Your fuel filter may be dirty and restricting fuel to your injectors.
have your fuel pressure checked.

SOURCE: I have a 1988 toyota

You need a diagram of the Distributor so you know where the Number 1 is at on the Distributor. You said you reset the Distributor and that is why you need that. You need to remove the distributor, re-align the cam so it is on teh number one compression, Both valves closed with the next cylinder in the firing order having the intake valve open and exhaust valve closed, and reset the #1 Piston to Top Dead Center on the compression stroke. Line the marks on the gears up and put the timing chain/belt back on. Reinstall the Distributor with the rotor position just before the Number one position on the Distributor. This should give you a good starting point that the engine will start from so you can adjust it the rest of the way. The best reference I can think of for all of this is the Haynes or Chilton's repair manual on your vehicle. They are available at most Auto Parts Stores. Good Luck.

I have a '86 toyota pickup with the 22R engine. This engine is carbureated with dual vacuum advance.

There is a fundamental problem with your explanation. You say that at 2000rpm your timing retards past 0? Your timing should be advancing. Hence the term mechanical advance and vacuum advance. Your base timing should be in the area of 10-15 degrees and with your advance, should end up close to 20 under load. Are you certain that you have an advance issue and not a power issue? A weak coil can cause missfire under load. Or check for a clogged catalytic converter.

The car smoke after the mechanic worked (retard) on the timing. Is there any specifications for the timing. The car also smoke now heavily.

comment on the type of engine ( petrol or diesel)
ignition timing for petrol engines is always advanced and most are set between 10 and 12 degrees advanced
with EFI engines the spark timing is controlled by the ECM but it requires an initial advanced setting to start with
really for a mechanic to retard ignition setting I would recommend that you find an accredited mechanic and give this one a miss
if it is a diesel the injector timing is always advanced between 17 and 25 degrees and it is a diesel then the smoking will be unburnt fuel as the combustion process is not complete
again find an accredited diesel specialist shop and have it reset properly

1980gmc backfiring

You must check that the valve timing is correct and also ignition timing which shoudn't be neither too advanced nor too retarded. Your car may have a leak either in the carburettor rubber support or in the intake system.

Ing timming for a 1969 chev 427 390 hp

It's trial and error. If it's a stock points style ignition start with factory settings. If it's an aftermarket electronic ignition, you'll need to know how much vacuum, mechanical or electronic advance there is. Most street engines work best with around 32 to 36 degrees total advance. So you use a timing light to set basic timing at 10 to 14 degrees BTDC, and find out how much vaccum, mechanical or electronic advance there is by 4500 RPM ( it's usually best to have all the advance in by 3600 RPM for a street or strip car). Then reset idle speed and use a stopwatch to test 0 - 60 MPH times and go with what setting gives you the fastest time without pinging. Maybe even a couple more degrees retarded for street use on pump gas ( you can always bump it up a few degrees at the track or when using octane boosters).
