I've changed my engine mounts 3 times on my 2004 A4 cabreolet and they fail within miles(start to vibrate & then within a week, severe knocking) the 2nd time, also changed the ****** mount, 3rd attempt, used audi engine mounts & again, felt a vibration after 5 miles driving. Audi mechanic(& others) never heard of this. Any ideas of possible causes???

1 posiblity suggested is a torque strut, does an audi A4 have one? does this sound like a possible cause to you?

Engine mounts do not go bad in five miles. Sounds like you're treating a symptom and not the cause of a more serious issue. Are you sure all cylinders are firing correctly? That the severe knocking is not coming from your engine internals? Have you checked the steel around the engine mounting points for cracks or other damage? And just in case, if the mounts you are using are poly, are you lubing them before installation?

SOURCE: knocking when first start engine

Depending on the period of time and intensity of the knock ? If it is a rapid short ,loud knock then disappears altogether you may be dealing with a cam chain tensioner that is loosing oil pressure when the car is standing. A loose cambelt tensioner can increase the noise .

SOURCE: Audi A4 ESP light comes on and car shakes/vibrates strongly

I am dealing with this issue with my 2003 a4. The Esp Is your tractioon controll, which is tied into your Abs system. Your Brake light Circuit is also tied in, so. Check your Brake Fluid, all Rear Bulbs, then look into Abs wheel speed sensor. $100 bucks each. The yaw sensor is unlikely culprit, but the ESP Controll module which is located under glove box is most likely the suspect.<!-- from fixya rte -->

I've spoken to several mechanics on my Explorer. I lost oil pressure and drove it home from work around 30 miles, it started knocking really bad. I had just changed the oil, they are stating I wou

Yes, I agree. Overhaul, or new engine time. Loud knocking indicates your crankshaft bearings are toast-it won't be long before a piston rod goes through the block, or the engine siezes up. Overhauling an engine with a bad knocking means a complete teardown and rebuild-very time-consuming, labor intensive, and very, very expensive. You might want to consider a used replacement engine with low miles as a cheaper alternative. Good luck.

Well the only thing you didn't change were ball joints and if it's four heel drive , the universal joints in the shafts. Since it is a balance problem I would suspect the drive shafts. Although these are uncommon to have a vibration at a certain speed, I wouldn't rule them out. Also the u joints can get stiff, this would cause your problem faster. Check them for a lot of rust at the caps. And just a note alot of front end guys miss the shafts on alignments.

I have engine vibration in 2004 Trailblazer. Vibrates when at a stop. Some vibration when in nutrel, but really bad when put into drive. Had motor mounts replaced. Replaced the plugs and coil packs. ...

Good call on the engine mounts, this problem has had a lot of TB owners scratching their head. Hope you used genuine GM mounts, aftermarket mounts tend to crush too much sending you back with the same problem you started with. With aftermarket mounts, the engine will not be as high as needed, the rubber isn't as stiff. Seen this many times. The other thing to check is you tranny mounts. Engine and tranny mounts are usually the culprit with vibration while in gear and stopped with TB's. What type of plugs did you install? Have you cleaned your throttle body?

If you are absolutely certain that the wheels are not needing balanced, then I would suspect the CV joints / Driveshafts. Sounds like one of them may be stuck.

My service light is on - on my 2004 Audi A4 - It has 67000 miles on it.. What service is due and how much am I looking at?

This is the big one - roughly every 60k miles the timing system needs replacement. This is the timing belt, accessory belt, water pump, thermostat, tensioning and idler pulleys, hydraulic damper, coolant flush, and other smaller jobs (cabin and engine air filters, oil/filter change, tire rotation, and inspection of brakes and suspension). A dealer is going to kill you on this - I've had people bring me quotes of up to $1500 for replacement of the timing belt alone (none of the other components included). This is a critical service though - at this point you can expect wear on the timing tensioner components and if the belt jumps or those parts fail, you'll need a new cylinder head. Check your local craigslist automotive services section, ask friend's with German cars, etc to find an independent mechanic to perform the work - don't go to a Chevy guy for this. If you're in the northeast US, I can handle it for you. Depending on location I may be able to recommend someone nearby as well (feel free to contact me at [email protected] for information).
