Question about 2006 Subaru Outback
2006 Subaru Outback AWD - In snowy conditions. ABS light and check engine light came on, "cruise" light was flashing. Also, the trip odometer said "Er 55." When I shut the engine off and restarted, the trip odometer was back to normal, but the ABS and check engine lights were still on, and cruise light was still flashing. Drove a short distance and vehicle appeared to behave normally.
Prior to noticing the above, I was in deep snow and spun the tires a bit before crawling out. There is a lot of ice buildup visible behind front tires.
I had this occur on my 2007 Subaru Tribeca. ABS, Traction Control, Check Engine lights were solid, Cruise Control light was blinking and "Er SS" (commonly misread as Er 55) displayed on Trip Odometer. All lights were cleared after 10 or so miles. It appears this is a Speed Sensor (SS) reading error whereby the computer notices an irregularity with the readings taken from the four wheels. Most often it is a temporary and harmless glitch and sometimes a result of debris that is impeding the sensor's reading at one of the wheels.

I just started reading this forum and noticed that along with the problem, the cruise light is flashing. Subarus have a built in system that, whenever your car throws a code your cruise light flashes, and cruise control is inoperable. I found this out after a $30 code read. Once the code is reset or it resets itself the check engine light is off and the cruise light no longer flashes. My problem was a loose gas cap seal, as it may throw a code at any time, the first thing I would try was retightening the gas cap, within a few miles everything was reset. Now every time I fill up I wipe the filler neck and the gas cap rubber gasket with a drip of gas on my finger before putting the gas cap on, and have not thrown a code since. It is always nice to have paper towels on hand for your hands. (I don't know when Subaru started putting this system on their cars or if it is on all models, but it is on my 2006 Outback Wagon.

Old message but if you have resolved your problem, please drop back and let us know what you found; it may help others in the future-
Call any of the auto parts chain stores in your area and ask if they have the free code readout service; most do.
I purchased my own OBD II code reader from Harbor Freight on sale for $30 and have used it on Jeeps and our Subarus successfully.

The problem is not with an emmission issue as you would expect with a check engine light. The ER 55 code on the odometer means that there is a loss of communication with the ECU, that is why the check engine light is on and cruise light flashing. for what ever reason whenever your check engine light comes on the cruise becomes disabled. Lame I know. I work in the service department and have seen this issue a lot. The only real way to fix this issue is to go the dealer and have them do a reflash for your vehicle. If the ECU is bad it is covered under the federal emmission wrty for 8 years or 80,000 miles

The problem is a 7.5amp fuse in the fuse box under the hood labeled "EBR+1" or something like that. Replace that fuse and the problem should disappear.

I have a 2007 B9 Tri beca, Check engine light, ABS light, skid light, battery light, brake light, R. Diff temp and cruise light flashing, Car also died while I was driving it. Any ideas what this could be

The problem was u spun tires. This happens because one or more wheels was going a lot faster than the others. Take vehicle to a place that has a abs scanner and have them reset computer everything should be ok than. Also removed all snow from around tires this is causing a bad reading

An addition to my previous post (after talking to my husband more). Three of our wheels were snow packed. Not the wheel wells, but the inside of the wheels. He thinks that this is what caused the problem. The ABS sensors are located there. Having them encased in snow was likely what caused this condition. Solution = clean all the snow off your tires -- and the problem should go away. Sounds like the problem is moisture gets into the ABS sensor or something shorts out with the communications to those sensors.
