Why is my 2000 Oldsmobile Alero chugging at idle, but driving smooth?
I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero (4 Cyl) with 270,000 miles on it. (Yes, I know that's a lot). The car was having issues with misfiring and failing to start at one point, so we replaced the battery, ignition coils, coil pack housing, and a vacuum tube that was fairly brittle. This fixed a multitude of issues such as nearly constant misfiring, dying while idling, etc. Now we have one last issue to fix. When the car is in park, it idles at around 750 rpm, but chugs. It almost sounds like a tractor if you stand near the tailpipe. If you leave it in park and give it a bit of gas, around 1000-1250 rpms, the car will smooth out and doesn't chug at all. It chugs while idling any other way though (reverse, drive, etc). While driving, we don't notice any other issues. It had been throwing a code p303, but I cleared it out today while using a code reader. It hasn't thrown that code again, but I only drove it a couple miles after clearing the code. Not sure if the previous things we fixed cleared that up, or if the car will throw that again since it's still having issues. Any thoughts on what to look at next? Someone suggested plug wires and distributor cap or the timing chain.
Also, I've seen Mass Air Flow Sensor as a possible suggestion to look at, but this car (4 Cyl) does not have a MAF Sensor. The spark plugs are about a year old. Also, I've seen Mass Air Flow Sensor as a possible suggestion to look at, but this car (4 Cyl) does not have a MAF Sensor. The spark plugs are about a year old.

Try looking at the PVC tubing that runs over the throttle body that runs into the intake and the valve cover the grommit might have went bbad I had the same problem and that's what it was

Wow, you've thrown a lot into your paragraph (rpms, going up hills, chugs, dies, when it warms up, when the A/C has been on, etc). With that said, I'll try to help you with what i know and what you said, and provide you with supporting diagnostic articles.
change plug and wire if its been a while most cars have 90000 miles platinum plugs in them.but the wires wear before plugs.so change plugs and wires.+clean fuel injectors .change fuel filter and air filter.if car still run rough your idling to low.have idling check .
I'm sure you have installed a fuel pressure gauge and monitored the fuel pressure while the problem is occurring?Another diagnostic tool which is easy to do,is while the problem is occurring, unplug one sensor at a time beginning with the Mass Air Flow first,.if it uses one. Many times, not always, depending on the sensor,if the sensor is taken out of the picture as far as what the PCM is seeing, like unplugging the MAF,the PCM will substitute the missing sensor output with a generic value that will allow the engine to at least run,and if unplugging for example the MAF,the engine idle speed returns to normal, you know you're onto the problem. You didn't mention if the engine ran ok other than the idle problem. As far as checking for vacuum leaks,i use something like brake cleaner or WD 40,more of a liquid, and it does sound like a vacuum leak.Plastic intake manifolds do develop nearly invisible cracks that open up more with heat.Revsisit the possibility. And as for the PCM,it is possible, but more likely a mechanical problem.Lastly, remove an O2 sensor or two before the catalytic convertor, run the engine and see if anything changes.Cheap way to verify the catalytic convertor is flowing and not restricting engine airflow,as i have seen bad cats cause misfire codes and strange problems.Good luck.
Also, I've seen Mass Air Flow Sensor as a possible suggestion to look at, but this car (4 Cyl) does not have a MAF Sensor. The spark plugs are about a year old.
