This problem started out occurring every once in a while, but now happens every time. When starting the car, after sitting as little as 1 day, it will drive slowly but cannot accelerate from a stopped position. The car drives down my small street, but I end up stuck in the middle of the road when I try to pull out onto the main road.

hi there, i have a 2003 sonata and my car did the same. it stalled and the engine light stayed on but managed to get going again. i took it to Hyundai and it was the crank angle sensor. it needed replacing at NZD180.00 with 3 hours labour to do it. evidently they remove the front of the engine and cam belt etc. the workshop at Hyundai did it and charged 3 hours, not sure if that was excessive or not.

I had a similar problem and had an engine tune up done and the car runs almost like new now. Mine is a 2001 Hyundai Accent too.

The problem is in the tumbler(s) inside the assembly. Before you do anything, try penetrating oil to see if that works... otherwise, the entire assembly will need to be replaced.

The sensor is located on the left hand rear side of the block (near the bell housing). It is held in place by a 10mm bolt. It's to the right of the exhaust manifold (LH - radiator side) on the V6. Once you purchase the new sensor you'll be able to identify it on the engine. The connector to this sensor is located in the illustration.
A word to the wise... replace the O2 snsr as well.
