Glowing red catalytic converter means your car is injecting too much gas, more than the spark plugs can burn up efficiently in the cylinders, or you have a serious misfire, so multiple cylinders are sending unburnt fuel into the exhaust system, where it will ignite inside the catalytic converter due to high heat. find the cause of excessive amount of unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust system. don't run it like that too much or it will ruin your new cat. quickly if it is glowing red... incorrect timing of engine, severe engine misfire, possible causes.

The exhaust downpipe is glowing red with heat?
To be honest, that may be fuel-air /and or cylinder head problem. A downpipe gets very hot, yes, but they don't glow red.

A faulty oxygen sensor can cause the catalytic converter to overheat - with disastrous results.

If you're not sure what you're doing don't mess around with things. get somebody who knows what they are doing to look at your car and give you an opinion

What do I do next

The problem isn't the converter. When a converter is glowing red, there is too much unburned fuel in the exhaust system and the converter is trying to burn it up, but can't. The honeycomb inside the converter will melt down soon if it already hasn't. Unburned fuel could be an engine miss from a bad spark plug, defective O2 sensor, plug wire or other.

2002 Ford Focus replace cadalic converter still glow red not sure what to do next

Replace your muffler sounds like it is getting clogged up and not letting the exhaust gases escape fast enough that will cause the converter to over heat. Good luck

Changing catylets

khalifayu Im sorry I do not know what a catylet is.
However if you are talking about a Catalytic converter, it is located in your exhaust between your exhausst manifold and your muffler it usually bolts into the exhaust via three or four bolts on each side and is usually rusted and covered by bolt on heat shields. Hope this helps!

Stumbling at cruising speed on highway

My 99 had the same problem and my mechanic found that the honeycomb in the catyletic converter had broken loose and was lodged at the opening of the pipe sideways, limiting the exhast flow. Once I replaced the catyletic converter the problem was solved.
