I just bought my 87 jeep and they told me there was a vacuum problem ans thats why 4 wheel drive wont work

  • bbhelsley Jan 22, 2009

Where is the vacume syliod located on the front axle. Are they easy to replace?

  • jeepjenn Jan 26, 2009

I had the same problem. The vac. actuator is a dealer part only...I was told and it was $400!! The guy told me to take it apart and check to see if it was clogged/dirty as that could have been the problem. We did as he said , it was dirty....cleaned it out and it works just fine! Hope that helps you out!

I have a 92 YJ Jeep Wrangler with the 4 litter engine. The front wheels do not ingage when I put the shift lever into either 4 high or 4 low and the light on the dash does not come on. What is the problem? Is there an electrical sensor or switch that needs to be replaced?

I run alot of jeeps, that vac accucator in the front axel is bad then,, they are cheap to replace.

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2008

No problem, glad I could help

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2008

Not a dealer item,, you can order threw any auto parts store.. If you have a NAPA by you they are the cheapest, usually around $40.00..

I have a 1995 YJ 2.5 litr engine. The 4 WD works sporadically. Once it engages it is strong, the problem is that it engages when it wants to.

I have an 89 jeep wrangler yj, when i try to engage 4 wheel drive front shaft is turnin but front tires are not pulling. any ideas of might be the case? just bought it and prior owner i dont think used the...

If you have a square box mounted to the right front axle tube, make sure the vacuum lines are attached to it and that it's working. If it's OK, then you have likely either have a broken differential gear set, broken outer axle joint or axle itself. I'd bet on the vacuum hose though. They did away with that unit in later jeeps because it was always getting disconnected.

92 wrangler wont go into four wheel

If you have an actuator box on the passenger front axle that may be disconnected or broken. If not remove the cover from the front differential and check the gears...they may be broken.

1990 jeep yj 4 wheel drive issues

what are you trying to say is that the front wheels wont engage?? if this is your problem? check the actuater on the passenger side axle there are 3 lines that go to it and that is what pulls it in and pushes it out of gear by air.

My 89 Jeep YJ manual will not go in to reverse while running

Problem is likely either a worn shift fork or bad synchro (both inside the transmission) It's unlikely that you have a clutch problem otherwise the problem would be with first and reverse and shifting other gears would also be difficult.

1987 Jeep YJ [Wrangler] so owner ship says''

Our Jeep Wrangler YJ's are equipped with a vacuum module on the front axle. It is used to engage the front axle when the transfercase is shifted into 4WD. Check the vacuum lines on the front axle to make sure they are connected. The passenger side axle shaft has a disconnect sleeve that is moved left and right by the vacuum.

1992 YJ can only shift into 3rd & 4th gear. No Reverse

The same thing happend to one of my wranglers, a 95 yj 4cyl 2.5 liter. The "Aisin AX-5" is the transmission that jeep used on the yj and tj 4cyl and 83 cherokee and up 4cyl, and the "Aisin AX-15"was used on some of the 6cyl models. Both are a "light duty" transmission according to the transmission manufacturer. As everyone knows, A jeep is no light duty vehicle, the shifting slider, a fork like item slides the gears back and forth over the drive and output gears to change the gears. and with heavy use or lack of maintanice they can break, they also can break cause of the cheap casting they used in the tranny. Other problems happen in those trannys too. The only thing is to tear the tranny apart and find out what failed and replace. I did this on the kitchen table ofer a day off. being the up own an early 90s yj, If you are one who doesn't work on their own car, I would find a good garage that is good with jeeps, they are not to expencive to fix, and when they are taken care of, will be a joy to own.
I hope this helps, Jeep ownership is a great thing.
