'98 Ford Expedition - 4WD/AWD won't engage. The switch to engage the 4WD/AWD does not light up and the 4WD/AWD will not engage. No engaging noises or anything. It's as if the switch has disconnected itself from the rest of the system. I visually checked the following fuses according to the owners' manual and they all look fine: UNDER DASH 5 - 5 amp 6 - 5 amp 7 - 5 amp 17 - 10 amp 23 - 10 amp 24 - 10 amp (I thought this one or #23 would be the problem) 29 - 5 amp UNDER HOOD 17 - 30 amp Is there possibly a simple solution for this problem? A fuse I'm missing? The switch itself? It seems like it's electronic in nature rather than mechanical. Possibly related - maybe not: The heater has stopped blowing hot air through the front vents. The problems seem to have started at roughly the same time, so I thought they might have something to do with one another. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer! H. Depending on the make and model, it could be the control switch on the dash or the switch that moves the gears in the transfer case.

yes-could be number of things-1st chec fliuid level-try to get car scanned cause its electrontrans also-car is 12 yrs may need rebild there--secure a manual or ask a pro to drive it

i have the same problem can't figured it out although when i turn the knob to AWD the light on dash just flashes. the 4x4 H and 4x4 L light on dash stays on.if u have found out anything please let me know or e mail me at [email protected] Thanks Don

solenoid switch that engages the 4WD more likely will need replacing. fairly cheap to fix replace.

possible solution is to take out your dash control panel which has 2 screws . pull it out the radio and all will come out and check the wirer behind the switch. see if it is louse or disconnected also you could need a new switch

one the transfer case there is a motor on the back side of the transfer case. most of the time that goes bad. if you don't have a trouble shooting guide with a wiring diagram, best to have a mech have a look at it. most of the time they rust and stick if not used a few times a year. best of luck.

Put it on jack stands. Start it up, put it in 4x4. Put it in drive. Both front and rear drive shafts should be spinning. Do they?
