first thing is to check the fluid, if the fluid is ok then you need to check the transnmission line pressure, best guess is the pump inside the transmission is going out but you will have to have the pressure check before we can make sure that is the problem....good luck
On the 2002 Spectra, it is just left of the air filter box. It has a
red "button" on top of it. It's not a "loop" like the oil dipstick.
It's just like a knob for a drawer, but vertical.
With an automatic transmission, you
would add transmission fluid into the ATF fill port, which is located
beside the transmission's dipstick.
I hope this helps you, if so please show me the 4 thumbs up for this free solution. Thanks Mike from Fixya.
With the motor running and the engine hood UP, stand near the driver's front wheel and look down below where you would add the brake fluid. You will see a black rubber handle. That's the dipstick for the transmission fluid. Remove the dipstick WITH THE CAR RUNNING, wipe the stick and replace it. Pull it out again and see where the fluid is on the stick. If there is no fluid on the stick you need to add at least two quarts of DEXRON III transmission fluid. It takes a special funnel and goes into the transmission where you took the dipstick out. They can help you at the parts store if you need help getting the transmission fluid back to the correct level. i have run my transmission very low many times and adding fluid always puts it back in shape.
If the fluid is okay, turn off the key and look up near the battery. Just below the air filter and battery area near the top of the transmission is a shift lever than controls the different gears that puts the transmission into gear. There's a big cable attached to it. Have someone shift through the gears with the CAR OFF and make sure you can feel that lever moving and you can see the cable pulling the lever into logical click positions. If it is shifting into the positions and you have fluid in the transmission you will need a transmisison shop to look at the car because you may have a bad electronic device that controls the transmisison or some internal transmission failure.
From the driver's side front wheel lean into the engine compartment and locate the place near the firewall where you would add brake fluid. It's a little plastic bottle near the firewall. Now look down below that and a little toward the motor and you should see a black handled dipstick tube. It may have a yellow dot on the top if not too dirty. It doesn't rise very high so you have to lean over and put your hand down in that area to grab it. That is the transmission dipstick. ONLY check fluid when the motor is running and the car is warm by removing the stick, wiping it clean, replacing it WITH MOTOR RUNNING and pulling it out again to check the location on the stick where the fluid stops. To add fluid, TURN IT OFF and you will need a special transmission funnel with very narrow tip. The fluid goes in where the dipstick came out. The 03 spectra has a reputation for fluid leaks from the top plugs of the transmission and this is not repairable in a mechanical way according to the dealerships.... so you will want to use transmission stop leak from the parts store for the life of the transmission. Get the really runny "acetone based" kind. It will work for some time and when it starts leaking alot down the road, treat it again with the same product. Ask the parts store to help you select it. Follow the instructions carefully.
The transmission dipstick is near the big black box near the drivers steering wheel area under the hood. It has a black plastic "stopper" at the top, drive car at least 10 minutes before checking fluid level.
Locate the transmission dipstick. To add transmission fluid, simply remove the dipstick and insert a funnel in tube, then slowly add fluid. Do not overfill, as this will cause the transmission to slip and possibly cause damage.
the fluid is drained by removing the transmission pan located under the car. make sure you buy a transmission filter kit so you can change the filter and gasket. the trans fluid is added to the dipstick tube, where you have located the dipstick.
