When I first drive car in morning clutch works like normal ( I can put clutch handle into all gears without problem). After driving for over 10 minutes when it is hot outside, I must shove clutch into first or reverse, or I cannot put car into these gears without turning car off. It is also hard to shift into other gears occasionally. What is wrong? Why does it work for a while then not? I own a 2003 Mazda 6 with about 177,000 miles on it. The clutch pedal has been replaced twice because the metal broke.

sounds like the clutch is going to need replacement and while there you should change the slave cylinder too

With any vehicle that has a hydraulic clutch, a worn master cylinder or slave cylinder will give this very symptom. First step is to check the fluid in the resivor. If it is low, you will want to check for fluid bypassing the seals. Be sure to check under the rubber dust cover as fluid can collect there and not be readily visible. Also, if the fluid in the resivor is dark colored, it is an indication of the internal seals going bad and you will need to replace the cylinders.

I had the same exact problem a few months back. I found that if you look up high on the brake pedal, you will find a switch that it hits to activate the brake light. This also serves as an interlock switch for you to switch the vehicle out of park. There are plastic tab holding the switch in place to replace it. They are a bit pesky. Once you get it loose, you can follow the wires coming from it and unplug it. Once that is done.. you just reverse the process and install the new one. Putting the new one back in went much faster for me. Its about a 1 hour job at most and the part runs about $18 from the dealer. Have fun!
