2000 chev silverado has auto running lamp mode. the headlights run all the time and the daylight lamps don't work during the day

Yes. These are called DRL's or daytime running lights. It is law that vehicles manufactured after 1985 must have low amperage lighting on while running.

Do you have tail ligts and side marker lights with drls on? if so you will have only dim headlights. Check fuses, I think the headlights are fused seperately.

Check the emergency brake pedal and make sure it is not on a bit. When the emergency brake are applied the daytime running light go out.

Push the dome override button 4 times and see if the head light turns off.------ If that is not helping then problem is ambient light sensor on the dash.It has to be replaced.------ Get a new one from the dealer ($13.82) replaced it.------- The wire to the sensor is very small, due to that reason, the top of dash has to be taken off.
