Replace the DRL module or possibly the headlight switch.

SOURCE: Auto lighting of daytime running (low beam) lamps

Yes. These are called DRL's or daytime running lights. It is law that vehicles manufactured after 1985 must have low amperage lighting on while running.

Do you have tail ligts and side marker lights with drls on? if so you will have only dim headlights. Check fuses, I think the headlights are fused seperately.

Push the dome override button 4 times and see if the head light turns off.------ If that is not helping then problem is ambient light sensor on the dash.It has to be replaced.------ Get a new one from the dealer ($13.82) replaced it.------- The wire to the sensor is very small, due to that reason, the top of dash has to be taken off. Click this link below to see the sensor:-- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/07/chevy-silverado-headlights-will-not.html ------------ this will help.thanks.Helpmech.

Are the head lights on all the time 1999 chevy silverado 1500 4x4

In the 1999 Chevy Silverado 1500, the headlights are not designed to be on all the time by default. They are typically controlled manually by the driver using the headlight switch, although some vehicles may have a daytime running lights (DRL) feature. If the headlights are continuously on, it could be due to a modification or wiring issue, and it's recommended to consult the vehicle's manual and seek professional assistance if needed.

Headlights wont work properly

Sounds like you have a problem in your headlight switch. As far as them staying on sometimes when you shut the car off are you referring to daytime running lamps or the regular headlights? If it's daytime running lamps that like to stay on and your headlights do not like to turn on then there could be a combination of headlight switch and daytime running lamp relay.

It is possible the relay gets the signal from the headlight switch as well, since they generally turn off when you turn your headlights on.

check to see if something is blocking the daylight sensor on the dash. If it is not being blocked check to see if the relay for the automatic lights is stuck. If any of these issues are happening then the headlights would be on switching off the daytime running lights

I have a 2000 chevy silverado Z71. The drl quit

There is a light sensor that tells the truck if it is night or day on the dash. Make sure that is it not covered up. If is is not then you may have a bad sensor. It sounds like the sensor is telling the truck that it is night every time the truck is running.

Start the tuck with the park brake on to see if the light come on when it starts. If they do you have a bad relay if not it is most likely that sensor on the dash.
