91 chevy lumina when motor gets warm and you let off the gas motor surges, then when you stop it sometimes cuts off. also when you put into reverse or drive it motor shuts off sometimes.

When motor is up to normal running temperature the motor has this skip (surge) and when you are driving and let completely off the gas motor wants to surge. also, when motor is hot and you put into reverse, it sometimes the rpm will drop and motor will shut off.

SOURCE: 90 Chevy Lumina 3.1 Shut Down At Stop Sign

There is a white plug that goes into the top of the transaxile, (open hood, look on the right hand side down low, you see a plug with two wires on it, pull this plug out. The engine will run fine after this with no problems, something to do with tork lockup for fuel saving at slow speed, below 35km/hr It locks the transmission at the same speed as the engine for fuel savings. I owned a 1990 lumina apv and ran it with this unpluged for over 10 years. or you can take the cover off the transmission, take off drivers side tire, remove cover on transaxiles, the part in question here is a small solonoid that is very easy to remove and replace if you want but not necesary to do so,

1990 chevy lumina, idling problem...stalling...too rich

Stalling and running rich. I have seen this before on a Camero. The fuel pump was weak. Not making enough pressure. This caused the fuel injector to DRIP gas instead of SPRAY gas. This caused the fuel to flow into the cylinder in a liquid form, and it did not burn well. We put in a new fuel pump and the car came to life. Good luck.

1993 Chevy Lumina stalls from a stop.

My 93 Lumina did the same thing and a simple tune up solved the problem. For whatever reason, the rear middle plug wire goes bad before the others.

1990 chevy lumina stalls when stopped..

If you live near an "autozone", drop in for free scan for trouble codes, then we can go from there, otherwise get back to us & we'll guide you as best we can. Too many items can cause similar symptoms, so better to get code & nail it first try, and much cheaper.
