2006 chevy malibu fuel gauge not working properly

Every time I start my car the fuel gauge reads full, then it drops and the gas light comes on along with the check engine light. The check engine light will stay on, but every so often it will go off and the fuel gauge will read at about 1/4 tank. Any suggestions???

Just replace my fuel pump /sending unit on my 06 Malibu, didn't matter if the pump was in or out of the tank, the gauge still reads wrong

The float is sticking in the fuel tank.Could be expensive if the float is part of the fuel pump.

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy Suburban: Fuel gauge reads empty, tank is half full

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

SOURCE: gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

SOURCE: my 2008 chevy malibu fuel gauge dose not read only

this is caused by a defective gas gage sending unit, the sending unit is part of the fuel pump module inside the gas tank, the gas tank must be removed to replace the fuel pump module that also contains the sending unit.

SOURCE: o7 chevy malibu fuel gauge set at empty engine

Had the exact same issue with my 07 malibu...took it to a trusted mechanic and it ended up being a bad communication module...module was about 650 and the total was about 800...that resolved my issue.

weird...first thing to do is get a scanner hooked up to see what caused the check engine light-free, at pretty much any retail auto parts operation-i wouldn't get overly concerned with the gas gauge right now, teh code that tripped the check engine light might explain that problem.

Could be the fuel filter or the fuel pressure regulator., does the check engine light come on?
if it does you will have to get a scanner put on it to read the trouble code, if not then the problem could be the engine is not getting enough fuel.

I have a 2005 Malibu V6 LS. Whenever I fill the tank with fuel(completely full) the engine light comes on and stays on for a couple of days. This causes problems with my remote starter - it doesn't work...

your car has a fuel level sensor on the fuel pump which is in the gas tank that is going bad this makes your engine light come on also makes your gas gauge read faulty, I think you can buy the fuel level sensor seperate from the fuel pump but i am not for sure my wifes car does the same thing i just havent got around to fixing it yet but when i do i will repost and et you know.

P0171 and p0463

Replace the fuel pump module (inside the fuel tank) it has 2 level sensors on it. The po463 code is an open condition on the high level sensor, one sensor reports to the ECM, other to your gas gauge on the dash.
