2002 sonata steering ignition lock up

If my car is turned off and the steering coloumn is turned one way or the other---when i try to start the car the key will not turn in the ignition. the steering wheel has to be wiggled to a straight postion (which is hard to do sometimes!) b4 the ignition key will turn and start the car. a simple solution would be to make sure the wheel r straight when turning off the car but my 22 yr. old daughter was not aware of this.
thank you for any help u might be able to offer

The locking of the steering wheel is a protective measure in case thieves try to steal your car . Turning the wheel slightly and wiggling it or remembering to set it straight is minimal compared to the cost of replacing a new ignition switch or other components.

Check to see if there's any wearing down off the key itself it appears to be some what smooth I would replace the key.. it could also be inside the ignition switch. if it is the ignition switch you would have to replace it by a mechanic. please indicate if my solutions are helpful thankyou

Thanks Dnow
I had the same problem on a 2002 Sonata. Ignition key would not turn and steering wheel locked.  I followed your advice and had my wife tugging on the steering wheel and simultaneously trying to turn the ignition key while I was outside rocking the car back and forth.  After 4-5 rocks, it finally freed up.  Thanks so much for the advice.

Ignition lock cylinder

Many times a cylinder will not turn when the steering wheel lock has pressure against it from the steering wheel. Wiggle the steering wheel while trying to turn the cylinder. If this is not the issue, the cover surrounding the steering column will have to be removed to access the cylinder.

Changed ignition and door locks and now my hyundai sonata wont start

Your original keys had a computer chip in them that is programed to your car's computer and you will have to have a dealership reprogram your new keys to match your car's computer. or if you still have the original ignition lock you can reinstall it and contact your local dealership and give them your car's Vin# which is located on title or vehicle registration. And most dealerships can make you a new ignition key. Then your car should sta

I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata...my steering wheel will not lock after turning off the ignition...however..the ignition is not stuck and I am able to insert my key and start the ignition

I have noticed this problem on various different vehicles...after you turn the car off and pull the key out, physically force the wheel to the right or left really hard...the wheel will lock. It just happens to not be in the correct position for the locking mechanism to engage where you last left the steering wheel...to experiment with this, try turning it back on, and turning the wheel just slightly to one side or the next and repeat until you find the "spot" that it engages easily...hope that helped

Steering wheel locked, cannot turn key to start, jiggling steering wheel not effective. turned battery on and off, inserted wd40, nothing works. help!!!

Try holding your steering wheel hard to the left as you try to turn the key. If this doesnt work try holding it to the right doing the same thing. Something happened to where the steering wheel lock engaged and that will prevent you from using the ignition key. Try this

My car ignition is locked up

Buicks are equipped with a safety feature that will only allow the vehicle to start when the sterring coloumn is in a certain position. wiggle the steering wheel around as much as you can then try starting it. If it is seized up, you have a bigger problem to worry about
