SOURCE: how to replace a heater core out of 97 buick skylark

There is a free way to find out where it is which is what you'll have to do first, go to any parts place which should have a diagram or they can just tell you over the phone. i will tell you this, hope that it's on the passenger side because if it's on the driver side you will need to pull the dash to get to it. If it's on the passenger side like the blower motor you can just drop the glove box door down to get to it. It looks like a little box woth two or three small hoses or pipes going to it which are failrly easy to disconnect. Hope this helped, good luck!

SOURCE: removing/replacing a 2000 kia sportage 4x4 4 dr heater core

The heater is located under the dash board to the right and down from the radio. To remove and replace it you will have to remove the dash board down to the fire wall. Also, you will have to disconnect two hoses that connect up to it from the engine compartment. These are located in the back of the engine and down on the firewall about midway. Once you remove the dash board and locate the heater core you will be able to see the location of these two hoses. Removing the heater core is time consuming but it will save you about 700 dollars.

SOURCE: 97 gmc heater core diagram

the hoses end at the firewall to the best of my knowledge. They have to be serviced from the engine compartment. The heater is another matter. Many of the old GM Truck products could have the heater replaced without pulling the dashboard. I would go to the local parts store & buy a repair manual on that truck for about $25 then check your hoses, then check the heater core. you can always by-pass the heater core by splicing the 2 heater hoses together with a $3 plastic hose repair kit & a couple of hose clamps. as long as the hoses are long and supple enough & not short or stiff & cracking. you can actually hear old hoses crackle when you pinch them between thumb and forefinger gently. replace as needed

How to replace the heater core on a 97 chevrolet cavalier

If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

Replacing heater core

Remove glove box to get better access. It takes a few minutes to unhook the vent tubes and heater mechanisms, but you will finally get to the point of opening the black plastic housing.
There you will see the core. Remove the one bracket that is still holding the core and the two hoses from the engine side of the firewall. A little maneuvering and the core should come free.
Note: A faulty thermostat can  cause  overpressure and apparently the heater core gives up first.
Good luck and hope this helps.
