Gotcha Covered! I'm a lifelong Ford Man and this one was a bit odd to me. Usually it's C6XX meaning it was made in the 60's as C is for the Decade of Production, the next number, 6 in my example would be for 1976. The other 2 are more specific Date Related Codes.
From what I found on yours it's looking like a late 1967 289 or Late-Late 1967 302 although we know the 302 wasn't official until 1968. I've got a few last year (67)289's and early 1968 289 which is recognizable by the 6 Bolt Bellhousing Pattern vs. 5 Bolts for 221-260-289 V8's up until the end of 1967. All 302's, starting with the first year 302's have the 6 Bolt Bellhousing that's identical to the 351W, 351C, 300 6cyl, and newer 4.6/5.4/5.0/5.8 Modular Motors & 5.0/5.8 V8's from the 80's-90's up through early 2000's.
So so I'll post this information with a link and pictures, but what did it come out of(if you know)? Does it have 5 bolt holes for the bellhousing on the back or the newer(68+) 6 Bolt Pattern. If it's 5 it's likely a 289 or Possibly a very early 302, if 6 bolt pattern likely a 302 but could be one of the last 289's- I have a late 6 Bolt 289 I pulled from a 68 Fairlane with a C4 Auto.
See what you can gather from this info and the pics along with the link I'll post, if this has helped please let me know by clicking the icon to let me know I've done my job. Feel free to follow me or leave a review as I answer automotive/technical questions primarily and I'm a huge Ford Fan, especially the old school stuff, I have 35+ 60's-90's Ford Cars/Trucks and every drivetrain part imaginable as I supplement my income dealing with old Ford Parts- if you ever need anything I've most likely got it and ship nationwide. Just a thought in case you could use anything and I don't know if it's proper or against any rules to say this, I'm not really advertising since there's no contact info. but if it's ok and I can help in any way, I certainly will.
Thabks and have a great evening- Daniel
