My 2006 Town & Country Minivan Starts with Remote, but with the Key it shuts off.

My mini van will start with the remote, I can put the key in the ignition and the van will drive, but when i put the key in the ignition the van starts but quickly shuts off. I don't know what the problem is.

The key sensor is bad

  • Anonymous Aug 14, 2012

I used the spare key and the van started and stayed on with no problem. The dealer, midas and the tow truck driver were trying to get me to pay for an over haul and all it was, was the key needed to be replaced.

you need to put a scanner on it and see what code comes up.
my guess would be the crank sensor which is very common .

SOURCE: Key wont turn in ignition

first make sure the steering wheel isn't in the lock position, putting pressure on the ignition switch. if that is ok, get the key cylinder replaced asap before it quits completely. (harder to change a that point) what condition is the key in? maybe try fresh one.

SOURCE: 2001 Town & Country ignition switch locked

you need to call a locksmith to come to your home. They will replace one or more of the tumblers/cylinders inside the ignition key area. The EXACT same thing happened to me. The Chrysler dealership wanted to charge me over $400 to fix the problem. My wonderful mobile locksmith knew exactly what was srong the nanosecond I mentions the make and model! $49.00 later - FIXED! good luck!

SOURCE: 2002 Chrysler Town & Country starting intermittent

I assume you've checked all connections from the battery and starter to make sure they are clean and tight. It is a little weird that you do not have trouble starting in neutral yet you get a clicking sound in park. My first thought would be the neutral safety switch on the transmission but you shouldn't even get a click in park if that is bad.

One possibility is the contacts in your starter have worn down and are causing too more resistance (explains the clicking). At the back of your starter is a metal cover that is held on by three tiny bolts (6mm). Disconnect the battery first! (You might have to remove the starter to get to this part) Remove this cover and pull out the plunger assembly. Underneath are two brass plates. Compare one plate to the other. If one is noticeably thinner then it could be the cause of the clicking. You will even see a round groove in the plate. You can buy the plunger and contacts from this website: http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/densoparts.html or you can opt to get a starter from your friendly auto parts store. The first picture shows the bad contact on the left. Notice the groove, the metal has become really thin there. 1e874da.jpgThis picture shows a pitted plunger assembly. Always good to replace it too.cd09a24.jpgThis picture shows all the new parts installed.207ff4f.jpg

When i turn key on on my 2006 town & country i get a whirling noise in my dashbourd and my speedometer and gauges all move but car will not roll over what could my problem be

Is the security light flashing? did the car start run for a few seconds and then stop before getting to the point you are at now? if yes then you car has a security issue most likely the remote head key has failed and now by trying repeatedly you have compounded the problem and have a locked up ECU also.

No remote or key for the back hatch.

At the base of the door there should be a pop out panel about the site of a deck of cards. In there will be a manual release.

My remote start will not work. The engine starts

It is probably the transponder bypass. Try this: Put a key in the ignition (do not turn on or to acc, just put it in) and hit the remote starter remote. If it starts, your transponder bypass is bad. I had this same problem. I have not been able to find just this part from Chrysler (you might).

You can purchase two types of bypasses. One actually uses a transponder key inside. The other is a computer chip that is programmed just like the transponder key. Your choice. Just do a search for "transponder bypass" and do a little research.

I used the TBKIII. Key & unit added up to $21.00. However, it only works with remote start. If I try to start with the key, it shuts down because it is picking up the key and the key in the bypass. Unit has a bypass for this, but I still have not found the correct answer to make it work. Good luck.

I cannot start my 1997 chrysler town & country minivan. When I try to start it I get a "alarm set" reading. It starts for a minute then cuts off. HELP. I AM STRANDED.

I have a 97 Chrysler Town & Country Van with 104000 miles on it. The past two months the van will not start and run after driving for a while. Let it set for about an hour and it will start and run fine. When it does not want to run it will start and run for about 5 seconds then quit. During this time the dash instruments will not display but the radio, windows, and lights work just fine. The battery was replaced with in the past month so I don' t think that is the problem. Any seggestions?

We put a bulldog remote starter in my 2005 chrysler town & country minivan, but when you hit the button it only starts the engine for about 2 seconds then quits. The engine light stays lit until you hit...

Since the vehicle come with the transponder key,(key with security chip inside)You will need to leave a transponder key in the vehicle as close to the ignition as possible(preferably in a hidden location)
