I have a 97 ram withe the 5.9/360 it has ran great until this week, maybe its the cold but it hasn't been a problem in the past. The truck starts up fine idles OK but as soon as you let off the gas when driving as lower speeds it stalls out, when you restart its stalls out unless throttle is depressed to keep it running. I was told it is the throttle position sensor (TPS) replaced it and the problem remains. The engine is new and so is the cap plugs wires and so on.
Actually our truck was doin the same exact thing and also at time when on park what accelerate extremely high, replaced the oxygen sensors and the problem was solved.
Check vacuum hose into throttle body, also clean throttle body orifices and iac. remove iac [engine off] and have someone turn key to on to see if plu8nger works. just a thought .

I looked for a vacuum leak, none found. I replaced the IAC (idle air controller) and that was the culprit! thanks for the gracious guidance rudyclark64!!!!!

yea i got the 5.9L and its been giving me a lot of trouble lately. It will often idle ok, but as soon as you hit the gas and quickly let off it will stall out. We just changed the throttle body on it so i dont think that is the problem, can anybody help please? What is the iac?
my 99 dodge ram 5.9 litre, 1500, 4x4 wont idle. Just replaced the crank sensor because it wouldnt start, now it starts but dies when letting off the gas
My 97 Ram has a 5.2L and when slowing down the idle gets very erratic and occasionally stalls. We cleaned the throttle body and that didn't do anything
I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9 liter motor. I have had the problems above as well, and I changed all the sensors, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. I've even cleaned the injectors. The truck doesn't die anymore but there is a terrible miss, only on the odd cylinders.
Lots of cash later, the manifold gasket has failed allowing atmosphere to enter the manifold and disrupt the combustion process, i.e. a miss. The gasket change is very involved, but should solve the issue. Also, it is a common denominator for the other issues.
