This car has been in storage for a few years. it was fine when it went into storage, but now that I am driving it again, it chugs really badly when I accelerate. I already replaced the fuel filter, the pump is working fine, I have run 3 bottles of water remover and 3 bottles of fuel injector cleaner, and none of it has helped. I think it must be sediment in the tank. how do I clean it out?
How was the fuel in the filter when you removed the filter? If you just replaced the fuel filter that is a good start, But you are a CIS,You basically have a coked up fuel distribution bowl. With the engine off, take out the air intake boot and acess the air flow sensor plate push it down,if it readily comes back up nice and easy then its in good shape, if it slowly comes up and even not at all use carburator cleaner try to clean up the lever plate,so it will have a smooth operation ,this is a fuel metering device,
SOURCE: Idling Problems
Note that all cars don't have the same symptoms as stated in the following procedure to cure your problem.
Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
SOURCE: 1993 VW Cabriolet Fuel pump or Injector problem?
Hi. This is more of a fuel filter issue than a pump issue although, a bad fuel filter will eventually destroy a fuel pump. When the filter is restricted or clogged, this will tend to work the pump harder than normal. this will over heat the pump, therefore, shortening its life span. I recommend replacing the fuel pump and filter and, adding a fuel additive like techtron fuel injector cleaner/water remover as well.
Please rate and have a great day:)

also, it is not old gas in the tank. I have filled the tank now 3 times since it was in storage, but the problem persists
