Hello
The engine and automatic transmission in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Power Train Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM

SOURCE: gear shift won't move out of park

safety switch on brake pedal. common cause is a wire breaking off. there are 1 to 2 wires going to this switch. It is located on the brake pedal bracket above the foot pad.

SOURCE: My automatic volkswagon passat will not shift out of park.

You may try to take the console out from around the shifter and in there its a little moving rod that kind of rocks back and forth to unlock your gear from park when the brake has been steped on.A lot of times drink gets spilled in those and then when you step on the park brake it want disingage which makes it stick in park intermitinly.Any questions just let me know

SOURCE: 2000 passat v6; check engine light+spuddering when accelerating

good chance with that problem you were close most likely a misfire will cause that. it would be either your spark plugs or coil pack. also make sure your vacuum lines are good and air filter is good. also bad gas can cause that problem. the worst outcome would be your throttle body going out on you.

SOURCE: Check engine light on. Trouble code P0599.

this code is for the theremostat heater control sensor that is under the intake. very labor intensive and should be handle by a quilified tech. the reason the code will not clear is because it is a hard fault and it is seeing it constantly or you do not have the proper scan tool with the correct software. it needs to be vag software and you can get one of these off ebay for under 50 dollars.

you can check the respected fuse for ecm circuit -j220 if that is okay it will need to be tested further.

let me know if you have any more question. good luck

SOURCE: 2003 VW PASSAT. Check engine light goes on and

8.5 hrs + parts sounds about right. But why would a 7 year old cars oil pump fail? They usually last a lifetime. Has there been a lubrication problem? Low oil, cheap oil, wrong oil? But then again my daughters 04 Toyota needed a valve job, head gasket and water pump recently. I'm doing 90% of work and it still cost about $2000. Her problem was bad oil!

2001 vw passat not shifting out of first

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems.

1997 chevy suburban automatic. has no reverse but drives. gears shift slow jerks while shifting into secound..before this it would lug while driving up hill...

you need a used trans, or a rebuild, but dont let a rebuilder fill you full of ****, all you need is the reverse drum, and possibly some clutches. the teeth on the reverse drum strip off, and thats when you lose reverse.

I would check the transmission fluid level with the car parked on level ground, car running and in park. It may need a fluid and filter change.

Desciption of the gear positions on the automatic gear shift

The gearbox normally shifts like this in "D":

1st gear to 2nd gear

2nd gear to 3rd gear

3rd gear to OverDrive

If you have the selector in "2", it will not make the final 2 shifts. "2" is nice for descending very steepo hills slowly, and also is nice to use coming down hills when it is icy/snowy, the engine will slow down in "2", and you will not have to depress the brake pedal.

If you are mechanically inclined, recommend that you remove the shift handle and check the internal components first. Might want to also begin checking the transmission fluid level.
