I have a 1992 MPV V6 with 103K miles. The engine is clean - gum & varnish-free and I have been using synthetic oil since early in its life. Problem is noisy ticking hydraulic lash adjusters. A mechanic has been replacing them in 2s and 3s but noise always returns after a few hundred miles. I've been told that Mazda have updated the valve gear to cure the problem, putting bigger oil passages in the rocker shafts and arms. Can anyone confirm this and whether replacing the existing shafts, rockers etc with the modified versions will actually fix the problem? Other suggestions I've received so far included switching to 20W50 oil (Mazda specify 10W30) and only using Mazda original oil filters. -- Andrew Crane CNE, MCSE, President Interleave Group, Inc. Network Design, Implementation & Maintenance We have a '95 V6 MPV and the engine has started to make a loud tapping/knocking noise. The noise dies down after the engine has got up to temperature and also stops at higher revs...It sounds similar to the problems highlighted on this page - can anyone tell me if the noise is the lifters (see videos below)? Many thanks!
It is caused by lousy engineering. HA HA I know I have the same model but what will cure your problem is several. The oil passages in rocker assy but not usual problem.
You will not believe it is the oil filter.
If you use a knock off it does not have a valve that prevents the oil to drain back into the pan.
So as time goes on it wears the hydraulic devices and causes less oil into the upper rocker assy to start. Then no matter what you do you will hear it until you replace them (Lifters) again. It is a vicious cycle.
So try to use Mazda filters with that design setup to see if it limits the clicking. If not try using heavier oil and STP additive.
I know this car almost better than most mechanics at least on the engine to rear drive. Been there done that deal.
Take your rocker arm assembly off ,then pull the h.l.a.,s out with a pair of pliers and clean them . You clean them by depressing the tiny ball bearing in the end with a small nail etc... and then force any kind of aerosol cleaner w.d. 40 or whatever into them. I just looked at pictures of the whole process on line at ''mazda hydraulic lash adjusters''. I,ts easy and doesn,t cost anything.
''see ya''
Big end or main bearing.
