I have a 2004 Hyundai Accent (automatic transmission). I have noticed a few times in the past couple months that I was having to give it more effort to get moving. Today, however, I noticed that it was not going into overdrive. At 55mph on the interstate I was at about 4200rpm. I also noticed when I got off the interstate it wasn't shifting at all. It was just staying in third gear. It wasn't until I put the shifter down into low, then 2, then O/D that it started running normal. All my fluids are fine and were just changed a week and a half ago. I asked a friend of mine that works in a repair shop back where I used to live and he said that it could be what's called limp home mode and that it's probably a sensor issue. There is an exhaust leak on the vehicle right after the o2 sensor that makes it kick a "fuel mixture too lean" code, but that has been the only code and has been there for at least 2 years. Is it possible that this problem has finally made the car go into Limp Home Mode, or should I look into other solutions?

It could also be wiring issues that is causing the error detected by the computer. It would be best to have a scanner connected to the diagnostic port of the car. The errors that can be retrieved should accurately identify which part the error occurred. Some shops would let you borrow their scanners.
