Make sure shift lever is all of the way into the Park position. Also make sure that the steering wheel is turned to a position where it can be locked.

Chances are that the key is not turning far enough back to release. The 2 issues listed above are the most common reasons a key won't turn all of the back.

Good luck!

SOURCE: 96 NISSAN MAXIMA SHUTS OFF UPON DECELLERATION OR WHEN STOPPED

Check to see if the floor on the passanger side is wet. If so, than your A/C drain clogged up and your ECM/computer got flodded by water causing all sorts of funky stuff happening. Right next to the gas pedal is a small cover attached to the computer. It has a clip in it. Remove the clip and tug on the cover. Look at the top of the computer to see if its rusted up. Remove the other side cover also, which is on passanger side floor next to your left foot(if you sitting in passenger seat). and check other side of ECM/computer. Check the ECM for rust on top.
If ALL of that looks OK, than I would replace the switch,(since you are telling me that the key got VERY hot) that is mounted on the back of the ignition cylinder. Its a white round switch that failes after a while especially car beeing 1996, just think about how many times that ignition has been turned ON/OFF since 1996. The mechanism in the switch failes, causing starting issues and funky electrical issues.
Does the car have a remote starter installed?? Or didi it have one in the past?? I have seen companies that install them cause some damage to the harnesses on the switch that is mounted to the back of the igniton cylinder. They use "scotch locks" to connect the remote starter and after a while the connection corrode and cause problems too.
Anyways, check the computer for rust first. Than I would install that switch on back of the igniton. You can buy the switch seperately. You dont need the whole ignition assembly/switch only. Switch is pretty cheap (approx $50 ?). Try that and post results. I would feel pretty good about the switch beeing faulty. I have ssen them fail in the past and that's where your power comes into for the starter circuit.(key getting HOT, switch shorting out, making the key hot and starting the car without the key)

SOURCE: key is stuck in ignition in 2007 hyundai sonata

The problem is in the tumbler(s) inside the assembly. Before you do anything, try penetrating oil to see if that works... otherwise, the entire assembly will need to be replaced.

SOURCE: grand prix steering wheel locked key comes out

This situation is called "Torque Lock". The Solution is simply to Turn the Steering Wheel Slightly in the Opposite Direction to remove Pressure on the Steering Lock Pawl. Usually this occurs when turning off the Key while Pressure is Applied to the Steering Wheel from a slight "Roll-Back" or from the Power Steering being forced all the way to it's limit in one direction or the other. Always be sure that the Steering is allowed to relax prior to switching the Ignition Switch to the Locked Position. This is a very common problem most frequently experienced by women rather than men. Let me know if this helps!

How to clear error 5410 on benz ML 350

Without knowing the circumstances that caused the light to come on and an error being stored - I would suggest a simple fix is to turn the ignition key so lights appear on dash - but not far enough to crank the engine.
Then grasp the steering wheel and turn either left or right until wheels are on full lock, then turn the wheel to opposite lock all the way, repeat this process 2-3 times. Turn ignition off then back on and start
If no fault light appears the steering angle sensor is reset and problem solved.
Usually low battery or battery being disconnected will cause the ABS and stability control lights to stay on.
good luck

Start and shut off engine problem

I am assuming this is a first generation ML. If so, your first diagnostic step is to try starting the car with a new key. If a new key does not work, you likely have a faulty all activity module which requires factory level diagnostic equipment to replace.

I have 98 grand prix ignition is stuck in start had to pull fuel pump fuse but cant shut car off lights are still on

Suggest disconecting the battery. Then you can work on the problem. it is not clear if the issue is the key stuck in the start position in the iginition switch or if the starter motor is stuck (running) after the car starts. If it the starter motor is running... Time for a new starter. If it is the ignition switch, try
pushing the key in and turning back off. Still stuck? Try pulling pn the key and turning off. Either way, if it is the key, yime for a new ignition switch.

Key fob not working

save $100 at the dealer. Ready ..Make sure u have new batteries or batteries are ok. Put key into ignition. now press keyfob anf hold while turning key to on position and count to 30 seconds still holding keyfob button then turnback to left and remove key from ignition. this will reset your keyfob and reprogram your security system. You will also know when your batteries are getting low by your red and green lights wherever their located. When they start blinking 3 times in a row its a sign your batteries are getting low... good luck. hope it helps..

My 1998 mercedes ml320 starts for 1or 2 seconds and then stalls.

You either have to replace the battery in your key fob or have it reprogrammed. Verify this by trying the second key, if you have it. AAA told me that you can reprogram it by leaving it in the ignition, with the key turned to the first position, overnight. I haven't tried it.
