Sometimes at start up will run very rough, blow black smoke. disconnecting idle control valve sometimes causes the engine to rev. and then it smooths out. i reconnect idle control valve wires and its fine but sometimes does this all over again when i approach a stop and the car idles.

Sounds like a bad motor mount, pop the hood and see if the motor shakes or moves rapidly when u put it in gear holding down the brake.

I had a similar problem on a 318IS.
The rough idling was accompanied by an occasional whistling noise from the general engine area (caused by air leaks through the front and rear crankshaft oil seals).
The problem was caused by a faulty crankcase ventilation valve (Costs about $100).
The vent valve is easy to replace - (2 screws) - check the vacuum hose that connects this valve back to the tappet cover air vent nipple - it goes soggy and disintegrates.- replace with suitable oil resistant vacuum hose.
While on the job, clean the throttle body / butterfly valve internally with a soft toothbrush dipped in petrol. This cleans off sooty deposits - makes engine idle rpm more consistant.

The battery could still be bad and if you don't have a totally good battery in the car it won't run right. Take to one of the parts stores and they can check it for you for free. Probably as simple as a battery.

most likely a tune up, dirty throttle body or one of the coil packs or the boot is bad.

Hi there?
It sounds like it has air leak, make sure the breather pipes have no splits or hols in them.
Most of the time you can actually hear the whistling.
Failing this try and clean the throttle housing with brake cleaner or throttle cleaner.
I'm guessing you have changed the spark plug if not check the spark plugs and checked the points in the distributor cup.
Try this and see how it goes
