CHECK FOR VACCUM LEAKS , BROKEN HOSES , OR DISCONNECTED HOSES ON THE MANIFOLD OR CARBURETTOR .EVEN A DIRTY CAB CAN CAUSE THIS SYMPTOM .

I had the same problem on a Rover. There was a leak in inlet manifold that was caussing the problem.
To verify, spray some sealant to temporarily seal the inlet manifold .and the eratic idling should disappear for some time.
If it does, you know there is leak in inlet manifold which you can take of and refit with a new gasket.

SOURCE: 91 honda civic dx. Starts, runs for a few seconds then stalls

Try pounding on the gas tank with a rubber mallet or similar tool. (careful not to dent the tank) Try starting it. If it runs, replace the fuel pump (it's nfg). I've diagnosed numerous fuel pumps this way. Remember the pump needs to be replaced, if you drive it, you don't know when it'll fail for good. Hope this helps. Please post the results.

SOURCE: 1994 honda civic 1.5 16v stalling after pressing accelerator from idle

Another place to look is your IAC, or Idle air control valve. It is bolted to the back of the intake manifold, and can be removed and cleaned. It is usually the cause of most Honda Idle problems.

What do I do, I replaced the blown head gasket on my 1997 Honda civic and the engine is now vibrating during idling?

You need to:)
1. Test the cooling system to make sure there is no leakage.
2. Verify the timing is exactly set according to the manual using the procedures to make sure all timing points are set on the marks exactly. One or two degrees can cause rough idling but still let the car run.

3 Go over everything you did, make sure there is nothing disconnected like a vacuum hose, any wiring. (you can spray carb cleaner around the vacuum lines to see if you notice a change in the idle if it hits a leaking area, use caution, this is flammable and should only be done a few seconds at a time, then aired out.

good luck!

I have a 96 Honda Civic HX. When I am at idle the car starts to shake and the rpms fall almost to zero. I took the car to a mechanic and was told that I need a new Catalytic Converter and the EGR ports...

Yes and No. The EGR can cause the car to idle rough and or stall. I am assumeing the check engine light was on and set code for EGR and Catalytic Converter. If the engine isn't running right it is possible the cat won't work right due to improper air fuel ratio that the EGR is causing. To do repair proper the EGR should be fixed then clear codes and see if the code for Catalytic Converter. There are other reasons that would your car to idle rough or stall I am just assuming that this mechanic got codes or tested the EGR right.

At idle engine surge's up and down usually a few hundred RPM's

DS THIS PROCEDURE
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
