It idles in park, but instantly dies when i shift into drive unless i give it gas to bring the rpms high, if i am coming to a stop i have to put it into neutral and keep the gas pressed to keep it from stalling. when idling in park or driving with gas applied it seems to run normal. It doesnt sputter or hesitate or seem to have reduced power, etc... thanks for any help!
Disconnect the Mass Air Flow sensor and see if it will straighten up when the service engine light illuminates. Once the PCM sees the MAF fault, it will default to run without it. If the vehicle runs better with it disconnected, it could indicate a dirty MAF or low fuel pressure. I am suspecting low fuel pressure.
To start with, you have a throttle body instead of a carburetor.
On that throttle body is a component called an air control valve.
That valve is how the computer controls the idle speed. It should open and close the air flow into the intake manifold as needed.
Is the check engine light on when you are driving ? Have you checked the fuel pressure ?

I have experienced this problem on similar vehicles. You should try and replace the coolant temp sensor. If it is not reading the correct temp to the ecm, it will not get the right fuel map. Also, the cts will not always throw a code.

check idle air control, tps & map sensor. As usual with electronics, test test test before buying anything/

We had the same problem and found it was the fuel pressure regulator. Upon replacing it no longer gives any hesitation at startup.
SOURCE: 98 Isuzu Trooper stalls on cold start, idle issues..
I had the same issue on my 99 Trooper.
It would usually start when completely cold, but idle around 2k RPM.
It would drive fine. But if I shut it down, ran into a store, and came back out, it would start but immediately idle.
Had to ride the gas a little to get it into gear.
The Check Engine light has been going on and off for 6 months or so.
I took this to my local trusted repair shop (no Isuzu dealers within 200 miles).
The diagnosed the light, and found that the Intake Gaskets were bad or leaking.
The idling problem was related to the car not being able to control the amount of air coming in.
They replaced the Intake gaskets by the next day, and I haven't had a problem since. And no more check engine light, which has been on half a year.
Here's some details from my bill:
(1) Intake Gasket set $107.95
Misc materials $21.00
2.1 hours of Labor
The total cost to me was $345.00, and I definately don't feel gipped.
