Mercedes maintained car. 175,000 km. Recently started noticing a whining sound of constant frequency from near the rear differentail. Noise is intermittent and only comes after a 15km drive. Once itb starts then doesn't stop till I put the ignition off. Whine does not vary in frequency irrespective of the road speed.

Indicates a fuel pump problem as that is the only thing in that area that is ignition controlled or possibly the EVAP system solenoid/ valve if it is in that area
the frequency will be constant as the pump rpm is constant
the noise could be a venting noise from the EVAP in in that area
the distance of 15 km indicates that the problem is heat related as it take that long for something to over heat and cause the noise
you may get an indicator by running the fault code

There is a special additive lubricant for gear transmission to solve this problem. Just add on to gear oil. I had the same problem. now ok.

SOURCE: 1988 Mercedes Benz 300E 3.0L Gasoline F.I. ''Sputtering at Idle

ok..you must have more than one car???? you don't drive the 300 atall im guessing. #1 start car drive up the road and \back to your house. #2 let it idle till problem starts. #3 once it does start with the problem keep it alive with the gas pedal. #4 once your have it safely from dying in higher rpms "rev it" like a kid would, you know like if you were gonna race some one lol. be careful not to over rev or damage engine. you should do this for five minutes no longer than that. #5 let it idle for another 5 minutes. #6 repeat every day until problem with idling decipates. it took mine 3 300e like 3 days of this. if your not going to drive the car once you get the problem out of the way. turn the car on everyday and let it idle for 5 minutes atleast and take it for a short drive once a week. they get lonelly you know lol. later on you can just turn the car on every 2 -3 days and let it idle but still take it on a short drive atleast once a week

Sounds like the kompressor, the unit injects air into the motor. Its bearings are probably on the way out.

2010 endeavor making whining noise from rear end at any speed. It is a front wheel drive. Put on new tires, still doing it.

If the sound gets higher pitched with higher speed, you may have a bad wheel bearings. If the whining stays constant, there may be something rubbing like the brake backing plate (especially on drum brakes). Try putting your hand near the backing plate after you drive it a bit. The friction from rubbing will make it hot.

I have a 1993 Volvo I purchased new almost 17

Could be tire noise, could be rear wheel bearing, differential (if rear wheel driven), or could be something associated with the brake.

Try swapping the tire with another tire. If the noise moves with the tire, it's the tire. If it stays, it's brakes (unlikely for the noise you mention), rear wheel bearing, or rear differential (lack of oil). Will probably need to have a mechanic to identify and repair.

Deceleration whining/humming noise

I would tell the dealer you want your rear differential opened up, checked, and more fluid added. There really is no test they can do other than to pop the cover off the differential.

Sudden noise, whining in 1st gear, reverse jerky

Sounds like your final drive pin in your differential broke causing the main spider pin to tear through the case.Catastropic damage.Check for severe fluid leak under car.If no signs of leaks, check dipstick for greyish blk colored fluid. If this is the case you will need to replace transaxle & flush trans cooler.hope this helps

Rear end whining

if you have a constant whine that raises pitch the faster you go, you have improper backlash adjustment in the differential (rear end), if you have a whooping noise that whoops faster as you drive faster then you have a bad wheel bearing, both can be the result of low fluid level in the rear end.
