Ford Explorer 2002 grinding and vibration under 60 mph

My 2002 Ford Explorer is experiencing a vibration that feels like a grinding in both the steering wheel and in the gas/brake pedal. This grinding goes away if I'm driving over 60 mph. If I slow to under 60 mph the grinding comes back. I have a known issue with my fuel pump starting to fail, I don't think this grinding/vibration relates. Other than the grinding the only other symptom is an ABS light that will light up and turn off randomly. Does this grinding and vibration relate to my ABS system? 2002 Ford Explorer 4x4 Limited, 4.6 V8, just over 170000 miles with an automatic transmission.

You have wheel bearings failing
the random abs light is the rotor for the sensor touching the sensor head because the wheels are loose on the shaft

Today and over the weekend .I too had the same problem. Took it to the dealer and they tested everything and could not find the problem. Did vac test on the lines, Test drove it with code tester to see if there was any problems . Checked the hubs... They replaced the IWE solenold. Just hope that is the fix and it didn;t damage anything else... Thanks for the above info!

I was driving my 1992 Ford Explorer when all of a sudden I heard lound grinding noises. It sounded like metal dragging on the ground mixed with grinding gears and metal under the truck. When I looked

sounds like possible brake job if the truck didn't drive differently or you can feel light vibrations on the steering wheel...either way could be costly depnding on if you know how to change your brakes yourself :)

Hi

It could be 2 things the rear differential for the 4 wheel drive or the torque converter, " is this an auto ?"
you may need to bleed the system through if this is the hydrolic set up, they have a slave cylinder and this can often be the cause if the fluid is low or has air in it.

Hope this helps

2002 ford explorer jerking

There are quite a few things to check here like the rear axle pinion bearing preload and all the wheel hub bearings. The best they you can do is run it while on a rack in 4wd and listen to it from underneith the vehicle.

Hope I can help...but you have conflicting symptoms. IE... front end vibration but no shimmy in steering wheel?
Let me tell you this: If you feel the vibration when cruising(no brake & not accellerating) @ 60-70 mph; then 95% of the time it is in the tire/wheel/balance combination. (I know you said they were new but could still be out-of-round)

Shakes at 60 mphexplorer xlt

Tires would be the 1st place to check. If you seem to feel it more in your legs then it is likely the front, if felt more in seat bottom then could be a rear tire. Depending on how severe the vibration is there could be a tire developing a tread seperation and should be checked right away. A simple balance of the tire and wheel assemblies may be all that required also but when on a balancer they should be able to tell if the tire has a more severe problem.
Driveline components could cause vibrations also however if the above sounds like it fits then check that 1st.
