Speedometer erratically jumps up and down at 70 mph

I have a 1996 ford escort 1.9 L with 55000 original miles. When I get to 70 MPH, the speedometer jumps up and down 20 MPH and I hear a low rattling noise at that time. If I back off to 60 mph, the noise stops and the speedometer stops jumping.

SOURCE: LeSabre 2005 speedometer whacked out

This is an electronic speedometer, nothing is user repairable, the circuit board fails and you get your problem, you will have to pull the speedo and send it out to an authorized GM repair station, they are all over the country, one company that does this is called SPEEDOTACH, LOOK THEM UP ON THE INTERNET.

Sounds like low fuel pressure. i.e. fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, or fuel filter.

SOURCE: 2002 regal would slow down going up hills then

the catalytic converter most likely is no the sorurce of the problem, older design bead type Cat converters used to plug, but it is very rare on the newer ceramic honeycomb cats, u need to have the electronic engine control tested, are u getting a check engije light? if not has the fuel filter been replaced every 30,000 miles? also a part called the Mass Airflow sensor can cause these symptoms as well as igntion system problems.

Hi have a 1998 chevy convertion van 163 miles.runs very good...lately the speedometer gets crazy after 40 mph and when get to 100mph try to shot off.... Any sugestions?

At 100 mph the PCM may be shutting it down as a rev or speed safety limiter. Is it jumping to 100 or are you actually running 100 when it tries to shut down ?

I have a 2002 Ford Mustang Coupe. The Odometer keeps "going out" and the speedometer will jump when I get to 60-70 MPH. I have about 142,000 miles on the cars. Any suggestions?

could be a fault in the gauge cluster, faulty wiring, or a faulty speed sensor. Check the speed sensor, sometimes known as VSS. Inspect the harness for corrosion and or broken prong.

Fluctuating Speedometer

The speed senser is mounted on the transmission. This device is an slocrto magnatic motor and they cost less than $100 there held in with one bolt and have an electrical connector. Many times if it's bad enough the check engine light will come on. This problem but the heating up but work OK cild is a good chance the senser has failed.. The trans mission should be checked for overheating as the senser failure will be heal related

Although you didn't mention it, the speedometer probably bounces also. Replacing the speed sensor on the side of the transmission should solve both your problems. Good luck
