1988 jaguar xj6 engine turns over it wants to start and at times run for a few seconds

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2009

Mine does this also. Starts right away and shuts off after maybe 10 seconds running.

The car is on a steep slope. Should this make a difference?

Hi
Sounds like fuel.
Check fuel inertia cut off switch is pushed down for on.?
Check for fuel pressure to the engine.
Sure your fuel is not water contaminated ?
Possibly the flow meter is faulty, or has an air leaks on the hose going to the inlet manifold.
I see you posted this on the 14th Dec O8 so perhaps you have it running OK by now ?
Good Luck !
John.

My xj6 jaguar has a code fuel 44 set and now it will not start. a couple of time before in the morning, it would start but run poorly would not take gas . let it run for a few seconds and it clears up but...

First...Check th cold start injector.

If the E.C.U. is faulty it is possible that injectors will be inopeative. The E.C.U. may also be responable for any degree of icorrect fueling. Before suspecting the E.C.U. for fueling problems, however, all other likely components should be proven good.

Just looking for location of oil pressure switch 1988 xj6 jaguar

The oil pressure sender unit should be located in the right front corner of the engine block, near the oil filter.

1988 Jaguar XJ6 S-LINE 4.0L V-6

Fuel pump is bad or plugged fuel filter it seems. Crack the line from the filter leading towards the engine first. If gas starts squirting out fast, you have good pressue. If not the filter is plugged or a bad pump. How old is the fuel filter by chance? If original its plugged up by now

Engine starts for a few seconds then seems to run backwards.

This definitely sounds like an ignition and/or timing issue. If car hasn't been tuned up lately (plugs, cap, rotor, etc) that would be the first thing I would try. Although the crank sensor is critical to proper operation of timing and fuel delivery, these usually just quit and car will not start. Would be worth it to check the crank sensor wiring and connections though as a dirty or loose connection could certainly cause problems.

I have a jaguar xj6 jf saloon 87 model and im having trouble starting the engine. Checked the spark plugs and have spark the engine turns over but refuses to start please help

Not sure if it would be the same problem, but I had a 1986 xj6 that was acting up a few years ago, and it turned out to be that the fuel injectors where not working right. On mine, there was a box in the lower right front the was like a control box for the injectors, and the circuit board started to corrode and make intermittent problems with starting and running. Sorry I could not be more detailed... Good luck.
