'88 XJ-S Misfiring When Warmed Up

1988 Jaguar XJ-S 5.3 liter V12 coupe - My XJ-S will drive fine until it warms up. After it warms up, it will only go 37 mph...anything over that and the engine misfires and wants to die. I can press on the accelerator gently and it will reach about forty, but if I press any harder the engine dies, unless i let off a bit and it will go back to about 40 mph. It also kind of has a hard time starting that is related to the misfiring problem...It will turn over but not start. after a few times it will start and idle. Could this be related to a tune-up, temperature sensors, or 02 sensors? Anything would help! Thank you.

DAIMLER XJ40 COMPLIENCE PLATE LOCATION

The XJ 40 DOES NOT have a compliance plate as it is the first year they were owned by a American company Ford. The XJ 40 better known as the XJ 6 was fords experimenl change over. This went on from 1988 to 1994 and with every year you will find different things they changed that were problems with the preceding year . like the 88 & 89 had digital dash boards that failed a lot to hard wiring breaking so on 90 they changed that as well as a engine upgrade

Sperts of power

Hello! Your symptoms tell me that you likely have a catalytic converter issue. When the converter becomes clogged, you will experience a significant loss of power and torque. This is often, but not always; accompanied by the smell of rotten eggs, another tell-tale sign of a converter issue.

I hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa!

Lack of power

You need to check a service manual on this but it sounds a bunch like a cold-start valve isn't closing once the engine is warm and this would cause an overly rich fuel-air mix that would gag a warm engine. I don't know if your car is equipped with  one or not.
