Don't just change just the thermostat... change the sensor located in the thermostat housing (if your engine is overheating). The whole works is located inside the timing cover. Sockets: You'll need a 10mm for the timing cover and the 3 bolts on the thermostat cover, and an 8mm for the sensor harness bolts. Then you'll need a 3/4 open end wrench for the sensor.
The thermostat on a Toyota RAV4 is located inside the engine coolant container. To reach the thermostat, open your hood and locate the coolant filler cap. Open the cap and then drain enough coolant so that the coolant level is below the thermostat housing. You should be able to identify the thermostat as a circular cap attached to the inside of the coolant container

If you have a V8 the thermostat is located under the coolant inlet tube. The tube is located on top of the engine, in the front about center. The thermostat is hard to change.Locate the upper radiator hose on your radiator and follow it to the engine block it is located on the top front part of your engine and you must lean over the front and look down onto the block to see the thermostat housing.
Most thermostats are located in or near the intake manifold area. Locate your upper radiator hose, then from the hose/radiator connection, follow the hose backwards to where it connects to. The goose neck or mating part, has to be removed. The thermostat is usually located inside the port. You may have to remove other covers and or parts to gain access to the goose neck assembly. You also have to let the car cool and drain the coolant before performing this task.
