1986 Honda Accord: The hood will NOT open!!!

I cannot and cannot, open the hood!!! Yes, we pull the latch inside, at the same time, pull the latch on the front down. It takes two of us! It's like the latch release inside the vehicle is not working anymore AT ALL!!  HOW DO I GET THE HOOD OPEN???  Is there a secret way to open it, differently?

I have the same problem except my hood release cable is disconnected with the hood release latch mechanism! Any clues on how to open the hood? Would posting a picture of the latch mechanism help?

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2009

Well, I tried and I tried... NO LUCK!  Now what do I do???  I cannot see the latch in the front, nor can I add enough tension on the cable to pop the latch!  I REALLY need to get under the hood to fix several leaks.  I only have about 5 minutes of running time before the engine gets too hot. HELP!!!

I will ask my son to take his camera out there and we will see what pictures we can take.  It will be later this week, since we have a snowstorm coming in for the next two days (SIGH!)  I REALLY need to get this thing open!!!  Down to one car with 9 people's schedules is driving me bonkers! :)  I'm a hair from taking a screwdriver out there and trying to pry it open! However, my luck, I would probley tear it up, for good!  So, for now, I will refrain.

Thanks.  The problem is only having 5 minutes of running time, before the engine conks out.  I WISH we could get it to the shop, however, it is about 15 minutes the other side of town!  No can do and can't afford a towing charge neither.  Hopefully the snow will move out here in a few days.  I'll keep plugging along till then!  Thanks for all your help! I'll keep you posted and I'll refrain from digging out the dynamite and the screwdrivers! LOLOLOL

I got it open! I put on a heavy duty pair of work gloves.  I pulled the cabel under the dash down, while pulling the latch release under the dash.  It worked!  YAY!  Now, the diagnose the engine problem.  Looks like the thermostat, air filters and gaskets need replacing.  Thanks for your help!!!

Use a flashlight and look in & up through the grille & you may be able to see where the sleeve of the cable runs to the latch. When you look at it, should allow you to figure out which way to pull or pry to get it to release hopefully.

The only other thing you can try is to pull the lever, as far as you can, then behind/under the lever you'll see cable exposed, grab it with a pair of vise grips & try pulling some more. If the cables broke, it will keep coming, if it's just stretched real bad, it should work.

Yes , if you can post picture of latch, with view from underside some how, or as many views as you can, may help. The main thing I'm looking for is where the cable jacket attaches to latch. There has to be some way to trip the latch from that area.

How do i open the hood on a 2002 honda accord coupe? cable is broken.

I go up from under the car, it helps if it is on a lift. If not, get high up on ramps, or jack stands. Remove the splash shield and reach up with a long, hooked tool. You can see the latch, and trip the release with the tool. Hope this helps. Remember to have the car safely lifted up with at least 2 types of support, in case 1 fails.

The cable broke that releases the hood on my 1995 Honda Accord and now the release latch inside the foot well does not work and the hood does not open. Is there an emergency way to open the hood? I have a...

There is no emergency latch. The best way to get it open is to remove the cable from the release latch in the footwell, then use a pair of pliers to pull the cable and open the hood. You might even have to strip the cable covering back a little to get to the cable.

Cant open hood on 2002 accord. cable is broken on hood end, is their a way to get hood open with a screwdriver?

if you get the car up in the air just pull the bottom of the bumper so you can get your hand inside there and on the left (standing in front of the car) you will see like a small little square thing on the latch wwaaayy up in there. take a long screw driver and just move it like a eighth inch and your hood will pop right open.

Or you will have to remove the front bumper.
Best of luck

Power out, key's locked in 84 honda need to open hood but hood only has latch inside of locked car!

Open the door to the car with some lock out tools ( AAA service units have them) and pop the hood...
Otherwise , there is a manual latch release if you lie on your back under the front bumper you can see... that is tripable with a regular screwdriver... (in the case the cable breaks)...

Hood wire is out from the latch at the hood end...how to open the hood (1997 Honda accord)

first, try smacking the hood at one of the front corners while someone else pulls the release handle. or even after you've pulled on it. if that works, once open, adjust and lubricate the hood latch assembly. if it still won't open, and it's the cable and not the latch you'll have to replace it anyway, so instead of removing the grill, cut the cable behind the pull lever under the dash where you can reach it. then skin the outer cable insulation away from the actual steel cable exposing an inch or two of it. then holding the insulation and plastic housing with pliers, grab the steel cable itself with pliers and pull it to open the hood. then replace the cable. the further you can reach up under the panel the better your chances of getting past the broken part of the cable and avoid removing the grill. you might also be able to gain access from up under the car if you're lucky.

How do you open the hood to a 1986 Honda Civic with a broken hood latch cable?

Slide under car in front center and slightly on the driver's side.
Reach really high and find the broken cable and tug to the right (towards the driver side tire). You may want to use a flashlight and locking pliers.
