Jetta has no gas pedal pressure

My 88 jetta seems to be having problems starting in the morning (usually no problem any other time), this morning I woke up late and was frantically trying to get it started since I was already late and pumped the gas pedal to help get it going. It started up eventually, but then I had no pressure in the gas pedal.

The car does back up and drive slowly forward when in reverse or first just by letting up on the clutch, but no response from the gas pedal, so I can't really drive anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If this car has a carb, the most common problem is the auto choke mechanism get siezed/ gummed up. Remove tha carb plenum in the morning before starting. Depress the accelerator pedal and check that the flap on top of the carb has closed.

Hard cold start 1997 Jetta gas

can't say for sure but almost all engines that have come to me needing ether to cold start have poor compression. test the compression first.
you sould never need to use ether on a gas engine and very carefully on a diesel when very cold.

Loud clicking noise and black smoke...

Seems like an injector and valves. Check if all injectors are giving same pressure, none leaking or damaged, the injector pump working fine and all filter in the pump are clean (yes there are small filters inside under every electro-sensor), get valves gaps checked and adjusted. at this kind of mileage its a must.

Car won't start consistently.

Try turning on the key and counting to ten. If the engine starts, your fuel system is either syphoning back into the tank and/or your injectors a leaking down. Have your fuel filter changed and the fuel pressure regulater tested for output pressure setting. If your injectors are bleeding down the fuel can go into the cylinders(flooding) or permit the fuel to drain back. Tjis is a must fix issue because gas will dilute the oil causing serious damage to bearings. Good Luck, Ned.
