2003 olds alero will not communicate with a scan tool

Was troubleshooting security issues, but was able to start with fuel pump relay jumper, previous communication was established with a snap on solus ultra, had codes for no key in ignition and horn relay fault, nothing was changed or grounded, etc. next time i went to check codes the scan tool said no response - check for key on (it is) / data link connection

I'm sure you have installed a fuel pressure gauge and monitored the fuel pressure while the problem is occurring?Another diagnostic tool which is easy to do,is while the problem is occurring, unplug one sensor at a time beginning with the Mass Air Flow first,.if it uses one. Many times, not always, depending on the sensor,if the sensor is taken out of the picture as far as what the PCM is seeing, like unplugging the MAF,the PCM will substitute the missing sensor output with a generic value that will allow the engine to at least run,and if unplugging for example the MAF,the engine idle speed returns to normal, you know you're onto the problem. You didn't mention if the engine ran ok other than the idle problem. As far as checking for vacuum leaks,i use something like brake cleaner or WD 40,more of a liquid, and it does sound like a vacuum leak.Plastic intake manifolds do develop nearly invisible cracks that open up more with heat.Revsisit the possibility. And as for the PCM,it is possible, but more likely a mechanical problem.Lastly, remove an O2 sensor or two before the catalytic convertor, run the engine and see if anything changes.Cheap way to verify the catalytic convertor is flowing and not restricting engine airflow,as i have seen bad cats cause misfire codes and strange problems.Good luck.

Check to make sure the Security light in dash on right hand corner is not on. If it is on , your passlock is enabled. to dissable it turn your key on but not start it and wait for apx 10-15 minutes. this should re-set it.

2003 Oldsmobile Alero starts and then dies. I've put new crankshaft sensor in it and fuel filter. Battery is good and the fuel pump is working. The security light isn't on, what else could it be?

Question edited for clarity and typos.
Question moved to model category.

It is a known issue. Fuel pumps can work, but not provide enough pressure, so you need to test with a pressure gauge. There is also a Pressure Regulator. Have a read of this.

My car was running fine and out of nowhere it just shut off and it wont start back

The same thing happened to my 03 olds Alero, i pluged my scan tool in and found out that my fuel pump was bad, I changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, and also checked the fuel injectors and blew out the fuel lines, now it's running great.

FUEL PRESSURE WHEN CYCLING THE KEY, NO PRESSURE AFTER THAT

The pump gets power from the pump relay, for 3-5 seconds during cranking, and then once the engine computer sees oil pressure or RPM. The engine computer grounds the relay.

Fuel pump non functioning

Hi. here are a few steps that will help you troubleshoot this device.

Step1 Go to the back of your carand take off the fuel filler cap. Ask an assistant to turn the ignitionon but do not start the engine. Listen closely for a brief, vibratorysound coming from the tank. If you cannot hear the sound, go to thenext step. Step2Check the fuel pump circuit fuse. It should be in the fuse panel underthe dashboard or in the engine compartment Verify that it is in goodcondition and the contacts are free from corrosion. If necessary, replace it and test the pump again. Step3Inspect fuel lines, hoses and connectors. Make sure hoses are not torn, bent or obstructed. Verify there are no gas leaks. Step4Locate the fuel pump relay. You might find it in the enginecompartment, at the driver or passenger side and close to thewindshield or at the front of the engine as part of a cluster ofrelays. Another common place is under the dashboard. Step5Remove the fuel pump relay. Ask an assistant to turn the ignition onbut do not start the engine. Using a test light, check for incomingvoltage at the relay connector. If there is no voltage, check for anopen or short at the wire between the relay and the fuse panel. Step6Jump the relay connector to apply battery voltage to the fuel pump. After the jumper wire is connected, ask an assistant to turn on theignition while you listen for fuel pump operation as described in step1. If the fuel pump works now, replace the relay and test again.Another alternative is to test the fuel pump relay for properoperation. Step7Locate the fuel pump connector at the back of the car and check forincoming voltage with a test light. While you check for voltage, ask anassistant to turn on the ignition but do not start the engine. If thereis no voltage, check for an open or short at the wire between the relayand the fuel pump. Step8 Check the power and ground connections at the pump and make sure they are good and free of corrosion. Step9Test the fuel pump. Apply direct voltage to the fuel pump. If youcannot easily remove the fuel pump through the trunk of your vehicle, you might want to take a fully charge car battery to the back of thecar. Raise the vehicle and secure it firmly on jack stands. Unplug thefuel connector and use a couple of jumper wires to connect the batteryto the fuel pump. If the pump does not work, replace it.

Please rate and god bless:)

This is a bad PCM. Try to disconnect the security system first and if it still does not start then it is the PCM.
