Why do I have radiator steam come thru my heating vents in my car?

When I put on my defrost, and fan on high, windows will not clear, Climate control buttons work sporadically, and when I push the bi-level button, steam that smells like rad steam comes thru the vents and fogs the windows up. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello. Still a rookie car fixer, but I think I found the problem. Rad was low on fluid, saw a wet spot on my right side floor. I figured core heater, and sure enough it was leaking. I put 2 small containers of Barsleak in the rad and it seems to have stopped the leak, and the steam is no longrr coming out of the vents. AND the climate control buttons seem to be acting normal again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks again .

Thanks Jeffrey. You are right. It was the core heater leaking. I am temporarily by-passing the heater core. It's going to be 4 hours labor in a shop to fix a 60 dollar part, which I can't afford right now. Reading the manual sounds like a major job for a rookie like me. Maybe it will stay warm until next summer. Thanks again for your help.

Be careful with that Barsleak. Don't be surprised if you see seals and or your radiator blown out. Not only will it plug the leak but it can also plug things that you do not want plugged, such as hoses and seals

Testimonial: "Thanks leftyb-10. I never really thought of plugging everything else up.When it rains it pours with ol' Betsy. Trying for a quick and hopefully a cheap fix. Thanks."

you can still have heat and not have it leak real hard on your radiator cap make sure it cool back it off one notch looser and your coolant will flow but it wont leak near has bad plus since you plan on changing it you could use a can off block sealer not radiator but first just put about a half cup off black pepper and that may plug the leak .it works

SOUNDS LIKE A HEATER CORE LEAK....BUT DON'T EXPECT "BARS LEAK" TO LAST TOO LONG. NO DEFROST SITUATION COULD BE THAT YOU ARE SET ON "RE-CIRCULATION INSTEAD OF FRESH AIR INTAKE. ALSO RUNNING THE A/C ...(YES ESPECIALLY IN WINTER) WILL HELP TO DEFROST QUICKER AND KEEP A/C O-RINGS AND SEALS LUBED SO THEY DON'T DRY OUT CAUSING AN A/C FIX IN THE SPRING!!!

SOURCE: rear defrost on 1999 buicl park ave

Jeff, If you have already checked the fuses, check the wires attached to the defroster Grid. You may be able to see them inside the rear window. Make sure they are still connected. You might also want to check in the trunk the wires may run into it, and might have peen pulled apart when you put somthing in the trunk. As a last resort take a continuity tester and check the grid itself to make sure it hasn't failed altogether. Un plug the wires b-4 you test it to avoid a false reading.

SOURCE: 93 Buick LeSabre with nonresponsive climate control buttons

this system has self testing capabilities, have any GM dealer test it for codes and proper function, If I had to guess I would say the climate control head is defective.

My windows are not defrosting properly.

Do you have heat? Does the fan turn on? are you getting air from the defroster vents close to the windshield? If you have heat make sure the defrost control is working. I'd open the outside air vent and turn the blower on high speed. If there is no heat, the heater control valve is not working. Double check the radiator fluid tank, make sure you have enough fluid (antifreeze) Low fluid levels can reduce the hot water flow to the heater coil inside the car. If there
is no air flow through the defroster vents you may have a problem with the fan control, or the fan motor. Good luck.

Why do both radiator fans run on high any time the engine is running,...hot or cold

There are certain positions for the climate control system that will cause the A/C system to activate. When the A/C is on, the radiator fans automatically run to provide airflow thru the condenser coils in front of the radiator. This could be the issue. Turn off the climate controls and recheck.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Heater

the heater core is removable from the climate control unit. The climate contriol unit has to be removed to replace it. The A/C system must be evacuated and lines removed as well as the dash, to access the climate control unit. The steam is coming from a leaking heater core.

2000 durango cooling system fan running non-stop

Many engine control system faults can cause the radiator cooling fan to come on and run non-stop. Also, if your A/C is on or if you have your heating and cooling controls in DEFROST mode, this can cause the radiator cooling fan to come on (normal operation). Or there could be a cooling fan circuit malfunction (like a stuck relay) causing this to happen.

Check to see what mode your climate controls are in. If the climate controls are not in A/C or DEFROST modes, then you should have your engine control system properly diagnosed to determine the cause of the radiator fan being on continuously.

Also, if the Check Engine light is on, this is a clue that the engine control system is malfunctioning.

Where is the temperature sensor located on a 2002 hyundai accent

okay temp is not hot enough check thermostat temp rating is it 195 degree etc. are you in a cold climate state? Maybe you need to get a thermostat of a hotter degree[four seasons 195 degree should do it]. If this is what you have (195 deg. thermo) then it might be stuck open not allowing the heat to build up. Another possibility is air in the radiator system, bleed system. This too might be of help the blend door, which is operated by the HOT to COLD lever on your climate control panel, might not be moving all the way closed to stop the cold air from coming in the mix area with the heat. Move the lever back and fourth to feel any change in heat with your hand. Put the defroster on fan on high and put one hand near the defroster vent thee other hand moving the temperature selector. Do you have some sort of heat and you can feel the difference from hot and cold, then my recommendation is to check thermo degree rating, if ok then try to flush radiator, and if that does not work --replace Heater Core. Thank you for allowing me to help you if you need me just write,Lee

Sounds like the heater core (a small radiator of sorts under the dash) is leaking or a hose going to it is leaking. If in a warm climate, you could bypass or block the heater hoses temporarily. Their only purpose is to make heat avail to interior of car. The 2 heater hoses either connect to feedthru's at the firewall or simply pass thru the firewall to the heater core. Every car I've seen has it on passenger side.

Peer up under the dash, it should be clear where it's coming from.
