I need the timing marks for a 1998 Saturn SL1 sohc

Chain.

Could be that timing is out a tooth. If it was running fine before replacement i would say timing....could be wrong....just a guess really....hope this helps some and good luck..

if it is an SL1 it has a SOHC 1.9L. Basically the same engine was in all saturns 91-99, just different heads. the Sl2 had double over head cam and the Sl1 had SOHC.

When you get the timeing cover off there is a mark on both gears the one on the crank needs to be at 6 o clock and the one on the cam needs to be at 12 there is also a hole at 8 o clock on the top gear were you need to put a timing pin while you put everything back to geather the marks on both gears need to be cnetered in a link on the chain

The best idea would be to get a Haynes manual from the local auto parts store. The number one thing is to mark the gear/pulley and the block. just use a grease crayon, and draw a straight line from the gear to the block. that way you can align the gears back up with there correct position. also before you make the mark, the #1 cylinder needs to be at the TDC (top dead center) position. "Just need to know how to aline...". What? The best advice that I can give you is to get the Haynes repair manual on your vehicle. Anything that will need aligning should be explained in that manual. Good Luck.

Check the cam/crank sensors. Also, if the car happens to have a distributor, make sure it is not 180 degrees off. If this does not help, then do a compression check. Remember, and engine only needs three things to run. Fuel, Spark, and Compression. (in order of course.) The firing order for your engine is 1,4,3,2.

Valves Yeah. Put Some Valve Cleaner In Your Gas You Can Buy It At Pretty Much Any Auto Parts Store For About $5.00 If This Doesnt Fix It You May Need A Valve Adjustment.

A Valve Adjustment If Done Yourself Will Take A Repair Manual, Feeler Gauges And A Wrench.


The Timing Chain Is Usually A Steady Scrapping Sound.
