Loud Lifter possibly stuck! Help please!!

I have a 1991 Subaru Loyale (manual trans/4wd w/315,000 miles). My car sat for about 3 yrs because the water pump had went out on it & my independent subaru mechanic has been sick w/cancer so I just parked it until he could fix it. Well, he fixed it about a month ago & I have been driving it for about 3 wks w/no problems but now all of a sudden I have a very noisy lifter rattling.
I had the oil changed because it sat for so long & there are no other mechanics in my area that work on Subaru's. (My long time mechanic & friend just lost his battle with cancer). I have 2 Subaru's this one & then a 1996 Legacy Outback (auto trans AWD) that is burning oil. The back hatch is always covered w/oil specks. I have 2 problems. Can you help me? Thank you so much & God Bless!!

The ticking lifter on the Loyale is a common problem. There's a small o-ring between the cam tower and the head that, after so many hundreds of thousands of miles, would "fail" (not to a dangerous point) and the lifters would be partially starved of oil. It's not THAT serious... they can go hundreds of thousands of more miles like that. If you replace that o-ring, replace it with a spring reinforced ring so it doesn't fail. Those can be found at wwwdotthepartsbindotcom. As for the Legacy... those early 2.5s were cruddy. I've seen alot of them throw rods, lock up WAY before they should have. Best bet would be to replace it with a slightly underpowered but bullet-proof early model Legacy EJ22 or go with a newer EJ25. I would just go with the 2.2L.

My loyale starts and runs ok, but makes a terrible noise, coming from the engine area. It sounds like a very loud knocking, clicking, sort of sound. It doesn't seem to affect the running of the...

hi a loud noise like the one you described can really only be a few things, either the main engine bearing is getting worn and is on its way out or you have a damaged or dirty lifter. The main difference between the two is the bearing will sound like a knock or grinding noise and the lifter will be more like a loud tick from either the left or right head on the motor you may just have to listen carefully to tell but it is possible and they will both speed up with the engine rpm. A bearing will usually cause problems running/starting/idling etc so maybe lean towards a lifter if it is damaged it will need an expensive replacement but try an oil change first as this can also free up dirt etc and solve the prob

My 94 Suburu Loyale Started doing a steady ticking noise, What could it be?

Hi, it is likely you have a bad valve lash adjuster. Pretty common in these cars, as I helped another customer with the same problem. The labor to fix this was a lot, because the engine had to be disassembled. Repair procedures are available if you are inclined to do the work yourself.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Stuck in 4wd

Apparently, their is an electrically controlled, vaccuum servo located below the spare donut tire under the hood which is malfunctioning. It is connected to a lever on the side of transmission, by a cable. A temporary fix is to get the lever to move forward by hand. Jack up the car on the passenger side. Between the two transmission cross members, above the exaust pipe behind the catylictic converter, you will see the lever connected to the cable. Push lever forward towards motor to disengage rear wheels. This will allow you to travel on a hard road until you can get to a mechanic.
