SOURCE: replacing bad camshaft position sensor

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove water pump pulley attaching bolts, then the serpentine belt and water pump pulley.
  3. Disconnect sensor wiring connector and remove sensor retaining bolt.
  4. Twist and pull sensor to remove.
Reverse procedure to install and prior to installing new sensor, lubricate sensor O-ring.

It is located under the water pump. Make sure when you remove the sensor that you rotate the crank shaft and look in the hole to make sure the pick up magnet is still in there. Sometimes they come loose and cause a no start or long crank. You will need to have the code cleared still.

SOURCE: camshaft position sensor

The camshaft position sensor is on the rear cylinder head on the left end (the serpentine belt end of the engine - passenger side). It is a son-of-a gun to get at. When it is bad or the connector is intermittant or bad, the symptom will be irregular idle from 500 to 750 RPM or so.

SOURCE: camshaft position censor 98 rav4

One item to think about:

You must clear the code with an OBD tester or the light will not extinguish...even with the issue fixed.

The is much info on the cam position sensor on the Rav4 forums including pictures and discussions.

Camshaft position sensor location 2000 Honda Accord

A camshaft position (CMP) sensor is typically only used as a reference for sequential fuel injection into the cylinders by the powertrain control module (PCM). Technically speaking, the 2000 Honda Accord doesn't have a CMP sensor, rather a cylinder position sensor (CYP). This should not be confused with the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) which is primarily used for ignition timing. There are also two different engine options for the vehicle being the 2.3L 4-cylinder engine and the 3.0 V6 engine. Sensor locations will be different for each option so it's important to first identify which engine is in the vehicle. The CYP sensor for the 2.3L 4-cylinder engine is located inside the distributor and is not serviceable; the whole distributor would need to be replaced. The CYP sensor for the 3.0L V6 on the other hand is located behind the left camshaft pulley on the timing belt back cover and is a serviceable part. Where is the camshaft sensor in a 2000 dodge intrepid 2.7 engine

The camshaft position sensor is mounted to the top of the timing case cover. The bottom of the sensor is positioned above the camshaft sprocket. The distance between the bottom of sensor and the camshaft sprocket is critical to the operation of the system.

I have 2000 ford focus im working on and I had code po340. so I replaced the cam and crank sensor. It still pops threw the air intake and dies when put in gear. Timming belt is newer and still in time

A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
  • the camshaft position sensor may have failed
  • the PCM may have failed
  • there exists an open circuit
  • the crankshaft position sensor may have failed

With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
  • Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
  • Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
  • Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
  • Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
  • Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
  • Diagnose/replace the PCM as required

No spark crank sensor new 2.7

If you have no spark, and you replaced the Crankshaft Position sensor, you may have a faulty Camshaft Position sensor, failed Timing Chain or stretched Timing Chain, or a faulty ECM. Since the Camshaft Position sensor doesn't cost much, I would start with that after checking the Timing.
Also, be sure to check the condition of the Connector going to the Crankshaft Position sensor and Camshaft Position sensor.

HELLO, I HAVE TROUBLE CODES PO330,PO340, ON MY OBD2 READER WITH THE MAINT LIGHT ON IN 96 BMW Z3 ROADSTER 4CYL., PO330 IS KNOCK SENOR, PO340 IS CAMSHAFT POSITION SENOR, I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO FIX THEM BOTH....

The Cam Position Sensor is a common item to fail. However, the cam positioning mechanism can fail too giving that code.

There are two sensors and the Exhaust Cam Sensor is most common to fail. I always replace both.
Te CKP's are on the top front of the engine next to the cylindrical operation solenoids.

Knock sensors fail too and need checked or correct feedback to ECU with a scanner.
Find a shop near you at http://www.iatn.net/shopfinder/

These engines require regular oil changes with quality synthetic oils and OE filter....not a FRAM or WIX !

Buy only BMW sensors ...aftermarket have high failure rate.

How do you check and change a camshaft position

The camshaft sensor wouldn't explain the clattering noise. But a timing chain would explain both. Clattering from a loose chain and the camshaft sensor code from when the chain broke and the camshafts stopped turning.

Remove the negative battery cable. Disconnect the PCV hose and reposition Disconnect electrical connectors from the camshaft position sensor. Remove camshaft position sensor mounting screws. Remove sensor.Loosen screw attaching target magnet to rear of camshaft and remove magnet.
Instalation The target magnet has locating dowels that fit into machined locating holes in the end of the camshaft.
- Install target magnet in end of camshaft. Tighten mounting screw to 3 Nm (30 in. lbs.) torque. Over torqueing could cause cracks in magnet. If magnet cracks replace it.
- Install camshaft position sensor. Tighten sensor mounting screws to 12.9 Nm (115 in. lbs.) torque.
- Carefully attach electrical connector to camshaft position sensor. Installation at an angle may damage the sensor pins. - Connect the PCV Valve hose. - Connect the negative battery cable.
2.7L V6 Removal
