Changed the CPS on my 01 330i and still getting same code, car still acting strange. Any suggestions??

I have a 2001 bmw 330i which has a check engine light on so i went to monument and bought a new crankshaft position sensor (thats what the code read) and the symptoms were excaxt to how my car is running. After hours of frustration i got the new cps in and the code still continues to come up and my car is not really running much better. It actually seems to have a miss now. What else could it be?? Please help.

This could come from a variety of places... in no particular order... the "new" CPS is bad (get another one)... The battery is weak or has low voltage (replace battery)... The DME may need an update / DIS CD 30.0 or higher... dealer or good Independent shop can do this) last one to look at is the fuel filter (replace)

If there is a ticking noise on the engine it may be that your engines hydrolic valve lifter's may be failing. The reason why it may be a running problem is that the valve lifters are part the VANOS system witch is BMW's answer for variable valve timing. you have the M44B19 engine witch only has VANOS on the intake cam shaft. I cant be shure with the infomormation I have if this looks right and you require more assistance.

Please Ask.

I would first check for a vacuum leak. Common areas of intake leaks are: 1. The crankcase vent valve located under the intake. 2.Check the intake boot at the throttle housing. You will find that there is an elbow where a small hose goes to your idle valve. Using your hand feel in the elbow area for a hole in the rubber. Your tech can use brake cleaner and spray the intake to check for leaks or use a smoke tester. 3.Possible failing Mass Air Meter. At idle, in park, and a/c not on the meter reading should be appr. 18-22 hz

Unfortunately there are several possibilities that are common to causing the light to come on. I would suggest taking the car in to a dealer and having them read out the fault memory. Such possibilities are a failed speed sensor, a binding DSC/ACS actuator cable, or faulty DCS/ASC control unit. If you know how, you can disconnect the speed sensors, and check for voltage output across the the terminals inside the connector going to the speed sensor while rotating the wheel. A dealer should charge you about an 1hour fee to check out your system. Due to the cost of parts involved, I would recommend having it checked before just guessing.

Temp gauge pegging out, but engine isn't hot to the touch.

You could replace the sending unit to cross it off the list of possible problems.
You could check resistance cold and then with the engine at normal temp too. The gauge on the dash could be faulty too.

I HAVE AN ENGINE MISFIRE WHEN THE ENGINE HAS WARMED UP

Hello! Need to know the code from the OBDII check engine light...However, this appears to be a common problem on the 2.2L engine...Lets take a look at the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor (CPS)...Oil leaks into and around the Connector Plug of the sensor...Have a good look so this can be eliminated up front...This, of course, is based on the assumption that the code stored is pointing at the CPS...

This could be various things, but let me walk you through what to check. Is your service engine light on? If so have your computer read, autozone and advance do it for free. If it pulls up a code, more than likely that or something dealing with that part is bad. You could have a vacuum leak, or your throttle position sensor is bad. Some vacuum leaks will cause your car to idle high, some will cause it to act erratic. It is rare but sometimes the idle air switch can cause the engine to act strange. The o2 sensor causes some cars to do some odd things. The throttle position sensor and o2 sensor will throw a code. You could also have a bad coil, pull off one spark plug wire at a time and put a screwdriver in it, have someone try to start the car and see if they all arc to the screwdriver, if not you have a bad coil. Hope this helps

The first thing you need to do is check the engine control module for fault codes through the OBD2 diagnostic port (requires an OBD2 code reader or scanner).

Check Engine Light Is On & Car Is Acting Strange

You need to find the source of the check engine light. Fortunately on the '92 you have OBD-I and can check this yourself. This site explains it pretty well...

http://www.freeautomechanic.com/diagnostictroblecodes5.html

but the code list is incomplete.

This place gives a more complete code list
http://www.gmtuners.com/OBD1_DTC.htm

Or this place has codes too.
http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/

The error code can point you in the right direction for which engine system has the problem, but you will need to run some checks to nail down the specific cause of the code.

a p0128 is the code for ENGINE COOLANT TEMP BELOW REGUALTING TEMP it means you need a new thermostat, if the thermostat is not working right the car will not get to proper temp and will not burn the fuel properly and will cause more polution out the tail pipe,so yes that will fail emmision for that,,so now you gotta get that thermostat changed
