most likely idle air control sensor or low engine coolant I know sounds funny but IAC uses coolant to regulate idle. Idle air control valve or throttle body positioning sensor.

Check your fuel pressure to ensure proper pressure to the block, also did you replace the fuel filter.

On a side note: 3 things a automobile needs to run

AIR-make sure you have a clean air filter and your MAF (mass air flow sensor is plugged in) if you pulled your breather to innspect anything, there is a possibility that it came unplugged or you unpluged it and forgot to hook it back up, a car wont start without it being plugged in if equiped

SPARK-Make sure your car has juice to the plugs, if the plug doesnt fire the car wont run, if you have to pull each plug and ground them to the engine block to see if they arch. If not trace the problem down (if you changed the fuel pump you have some mechanical skill and should be able to troubleshoot a spark issue)

FUEL-Check for proper pressure, dirty fuel filter(s) and if your system has a return line, make sure your hoses didnt get crossed cause this will damage the engine and regulator.

Hope this helps Thanks for using Fixya.com

89 dodge shadow. hard start. normal idle cold, fast idle warm. sometimes it wont start until i hear fuel pump activate.

Hello,
The car may be hard to start because it may need a normal tune-up. If the spark plugs are pretty used, they will slowly stop burning as much fuel because the spark slowly gets lesser and lesser. On a cold day the fuel is harder to ignite with a small amount of spark.
Normal idle when its cold means that your cars idle is probably too high. If you lower the idle, the choke on a cold day will keep the idle a little higher until the motor warms and then it will kick back off. If the idle is too high, it will run very rich, smothering itself with fuel, and causing the idle to stay low. When the car warms, its creating better spark when its warm, and with the idle being too high its running at a fast idle.
The car wont start sometimes can be the cause of a few things. If the ground is bad on the fuel pump, it wont make a good connection sometimes for when you turn the key on, the fuel pump dont pump the fuel to the engine. Another one can be that your accessory switch can be loose going to the fuel pump. I think its your ground though. Good luck! Hope this helps.
Have a nice day. -Steve

1983 Ford F250 will start but won't idle without holding down gas

hi! there, its really help good of replacing old ones, perhaps the condition of current flow to ignite continously your combustion due insuffcient current supply from your ignition system could positively stop your engine,if you maintain this ignition system the engine won't stop running.in such a case this type of model need mostly to be tune up some internal part on the head cylinder should take place of correctnes such as intake and exhaust valve, the rocker arm seat valve and spurk plug.if you done this your worry will be lessen.have a nice day.
